IPL 2024: LSG qualification scenario explained

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are currently placed seventh in the IPL 2024 points table.

The 17th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has a few matches left to play in the group stage. Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals have qualified for the playoffs, and two spots remain to grab. There are a few teams that are fighting for a place in the next round. Ideally, 16 points are enough to make it to the next round.

But as seen last, some teams have also qualified with 14 points. And it looks like the IPL 2024 will be one of those seasons, where one of two teams might end up making it to the next round with 14 points. Well, five teams still have a chance to grab those two spots. Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Delhi Capitals (DC) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have 14 points each, while Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have 12 points each. LSG have the second-worst NRR this season of -0.787. But despite that, they are still alive in the race for playoffs.

How can Lucknow Super Giants make it to the IPL 2024 playoffs?

KL Rahul and his men were comfortably sitting at the top four with 10 points after first eight matches. But then, they lost four out of the last five games, which has made their qualification very difficult. Adding to that, their 19-run defeat against Delhi Capitals on Tuesday made things even worse. Now LSG have one game to play. They will face Mumbai Indians on May 17 at Wankhede Stadium. So can LSG fans still hope for a miracle?

Well, cricket is a funny game, and we have seen many unexpected moments in the past. So there is still a slim hope for LSG fans. But it will be a massive turn-around if it can happen. Firstly, to qualify for the playoffs, Lucknow need to make sure that they win the next game against MI by a big margin, which can improve their NRR as compared to DC. They will have 14 points after that win. Now, they will want RCB to lose their last group game against CSK on May 18.

That will push RCB out of the equation, and CSK will be the third team to qualify. Furthermore, SRH are also in the race. For LSG’s qualification. SRH need to lose their two remaining matches, which are against GT and PBKS. And those defeats should be by a good margin that can lower their NRR. It will leave DC, LSG, and SRH with 14 points, and on the basis of a good NRR, LSG will make it through the playoffs as the fourth team.
