IPL 2024 playoffs: Schedule, fixtures, dates, venues and timings

KKR, RR, SRH and RCB qualified for the IPL 2024 playoffs.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 kicked-off on March 22 with a clash between defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai.

70 matches later, the league stage has come to an end and four teams have advanced to the next round – playoffs. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) were the first side to qualify for the playoffs and after them, Rajasthan Royals (RR), Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and RCB followed suit.

KKR with 20 points to their name, finished at top of the table, while SRH with 17 points and NRR of +0.414 ended second in the table. RR, who were almost first team to qualify for the playoffs, finished at third spot with 17 points and NRR of +0.273. Meanwhile, RCB, who crushed CSK in a virtual knockout by 27 runs on May 18, finished at fourth position with 14 points and NRR of +0.459, which is slightly better than CSK.

The schedule first phase of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 was announced by the Board of Council for Cricket India (BCCI), where a total of 21 matches were played until April 7 due to the general elections in India.

How KKR, RR, SRH and RCB qualified for the IPL 2024 playoffs?

• Kolkata Knight Riders: The Shreyas Iyer-led side had a stellar run in the IPL 2024. Under Shreyas’ leadership, Kolkata finished at the top of the points table with 19 points. They emerged victorious in nine out of 14 matches played in the season, while their last league game against RR got washed out due to rain.

• Sunrisers Hyderabad: Pat Cummins-led Hyderabad a good run in the league stage of the IPL 2024. Out of 14 matches they played, SRH won eight games, and they ended up with 17 points to their name. Under Cummins leadership, Hyderabad finished at second spot in the points table.

• Rajasthan Royals: The Sanju Samson-led Rajasthan had a fantastic run in the first half of the tournament. In the second half, RR had a poor run as they lost four consecutive games. The Samson-led side still managed to reach the playoff easily with 17 points to their name. The Royals finished third in the points table in league stage.

• Royal Challengers Bengaluru: Under the leadership of Faf du Plessis, Bengaluru started their campaign on a horrific note as they lost six consecutive league stage matches and were languishing at bottom of the points table. Bengaluru had a dream run in the second half, where they won six games on a trot. They managed to reach the playoffs with 14 points. Bengaluru finished in fourth place in the points table.

What is the format of the IPL 2024 playoffs? 

The teams that are placed first and second in the IPL 2024 points table will take on each other in Qualifier 1. The winner of that match will directly reach the final, whereas the losers will get another chance to reach the final.

The losers of Qualifier 1 will play the winner of the Eliminator match in Qualifier 2. The winners of the Eliminator will advance to Qualifier 2, whereas the loser of that match will bow out of the tournament.

The winner of Qualifier 2 will then progress to the final, where they will take on the winners of Qualifier 1 in the championship match.

• Eliminator: Royal Challengers Bengaluru vs Rajasthan Royals, 22 May (Wednesday), 7.30 pm IST at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad

• Qualifier 2: TBC vs TBC, 24 May (Friday), 7.30 pm IST at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai

• The Final: TBC vs TBC, 26 May (Sunday), 7.30 pm IST at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai
