IPL 2024 updated points table, Orange Cap & Purple Cap after match 17 GT v PBKS

Match 17 of IPL 2024 saw Punjab Kings stealing a win by 3 wickets from Gujarat Titans in their backyard.

Match 17 of the IPL 2024 saw Gujarat Titans (GT) losing a game that they should’ve won against Punjab Kings (PBKS) on April 4, 2024. This match was played at the home ground of GT, the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

PBKS’ Shikhar Dhawan won the toss and decided to bowl first. Shubman Gill’s captain’s knock propelled GT to 199/4 in 20 overs. Gill scored 89*, with 6 fours and 4 sixes. He had assistance from Kane Williamson (26), Sai Sudharsan (33 in 19 balls), and Rahul Tewatia (23* in 8 balls). For PBKS, Kagiso Rabada took two wickets.

In response, Umesh Yadav dismissed PBKS captain Shikhar Dhawan for just one run. Then Afghanistan’s Noor Ahmad and Azmatullah Omarzai picked up key wickets of Jonny Bairstow (22), Prabhsimran Singh (35), and Sam Curran.

The Punjab Kings found themselves in trouble with big guns gone and needing 41 runs in the last 18 balls.

But then Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma joined hands together and ruined GT’s chances of winning the game. After Jitesh Sharma got out after taking Rashid Khan to the cleaners with 16 in 8 balls, Impact Player Ashutosh came good and hit a brilliant 31 in 17 balls.

Ashutosh and Shashank Singh contributed 43 runs for the seventh wicket, with Shashank remaining unbeaten on 61 in 29 balls, including 6 fours and 4 sixes. PBKS won the game in the final over, with three wickets in hand.

The updated IPL 2024 points table saw the narrow win punishing Punjab Kings above Gujarat Titans in the list. PBKS are now at fifth spot with 2 wins in 4 matches and an NRR of -0.022. GT, on the other hand, are pushed to the sixth spot with 2 wins from 4 matches, but their NRR took a hit, which now stands at -0.580.

Kolkata Knight Riders reign supreme at the No. 1 spot with 3 wins from 3 matches and a positive NRR of 2.518. they are followed by Rajasthan Royals who have also won all three of their games thus far but have an NRR of 1.249. At the third spot are defending champions Chennai Super Kings, who have 2 wins from three games and an NRR of 0.976. LSG are at the fourth spot in the points table with 2 wins in 3 matches, with NRR of 0.483.

After the 17th match of the IPL 2024 between GT and PBKS in Ahmedabad, home team captain Shubman Gill and his teammate Sai Sudharsan are seen occupying the fourth and fifth spot in the most runs leaderboard for the Orange Cap.

Gill made 89* against PBKS and now has 164 runs in 4 matches at a strike rate of 159.22. Sudharsan played a cameo of 30-odd runs in this match and took his tally to 160 runs in 4 matches with a strike rate of 128.

A major change happened in the race for the Purple Cap for most wickets after the 17th match of the IPL 2024 between GT and PBKS. GT pacer Mohit Sharma was awarded the Purple Cap as now he has 7 wickets in 4 games but at a better economy than CSK’s Mustafizur Rahman, who also has 7 wickets, but from 3 games.
