IPL 2024: Updated points table, Orange Cap & Purple Cap after match 38 RR vs MI

Rajasthan Royals defeated Mumbai Indians by nine wickets to inch closer to IPL 2024 playoffs.

Rajasthan Royals (RR) continued their dominating run in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, as they defeated Mumbai Indians (MI) in the 38th match of the tournament which was played in Jaipur on April 22, 2024.

Hardik Pandya won the toss and chose to bat first in his 100th game for MI. However, openers Rohit Sharma (6) and Ishan Kishan (0), and No. 3 batter Suryakumar Yadav (10) fell to the brilliance of Trent Boult and Sandeep Sharma.

Then Tilak Varma added 32 runs with Mohammad Nabi (23) and a massive 99 runs with Nehal Wadhera, who made 49 in 24 balls. Tilak Varma made 65 in 45 balls to help MI post 179/9 in 20 overs. For RR, Sandeep Sharma starred with 5/18, while Yuzvendra Chahal became the first bowler to take 200 wickets in IPL history.

In response, RR openers Jos Buttler and Yashasvi Jaiswal gave a flying start to their team, adding 74 runs in eight overs. Buttler was dismissed by Piyush Chawla for 35 runs with 6 fours, but Jaiswal showed signs of returning to form with an unbeaten century and added 100 plus runs with Sanju Samson for the second wicket as RR won by 9 wickets.

Samson remained unbeaten on 35, while Jaiswal hit his second century in IPL, scoring 104* with seven sixes and nine fours. This is his second century against MI as well.

Rajasthan Royals firmly cemented their place as the No. 1 team in the IPL 2024 points table with this win. This is their seventh win in eight games and now have 14 points to their name, giving them one foot in the playoffs. MI, on the other hand, remained at the seventh spot with three wins from eight games and five losses.  

KKR remain in the second spot with five wins in seven games, while the rampaging SRH are at the No. 3 spot in the points table with five wins in seven games as well. Chennai Super Kings are at No. 4 with four wins from seven games and eight points, while LSG are at the fifth spot on the points table with four wins in seven games and eight points.

Sanju Samson, who scored an unbeaten 38 against MI, jumped to fourth spot in the Orange Cap standings following 38th match of the tournament between RR and MI. Samson now has 314 runs in eight matches. Rohit Sharma, who added mere six runs in the game, is placed fifth on the list with 303 runs.

Virat Kohli still leads the chart with 379 runs. Up next is Sunrisers Hyderabad destructive opener Travis Head, with 324 runs. RR’s Riyan Parag, who didn’t get a chance to bat in the game, is placed third with 318 runs.

Though Yuzvendra Chahal completed 200 wickets in the IPL and now has 13 wickets in the IPL 2024, he remains at the second spot, with MI’s Jasprit Bumrah retaining the Purple Cap with 13 wickets in 8 games.

Harshal Patel also has 13 wickets to his name with his haul of three wickets recently, gives him the third spot in the race for Purple Cap. Gerald Coetzee of MI is at No. 4 with 12 wickets to his name and Sam Curran of Punjab Kings completes the top five with 11 wickets in 8 games.
