MI are almost out of the IPL 2024 playoffs after suffering defeat vs KKR.

Mathematically, it is still possible for Mumbai Indians (MI) to reach the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 playoffs, but it looks almost done and dusted for them following their loss to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the 51st match of the tournament.

After being invited to bat first, KKR posted a decent total of 169. Venkatesh Iyer (70) was the highest run-getter for the visitors while Manish Pandey, who played his maiden innings of the ongoing season, contributed with 42 runs. Other KKR batters failed to cross the 20-run mark as they were bowled out for 169.

For the hosts, Jasprit Bumrah and Nuwan Thushara picked three wickets each while captain Hardik Pandya took two wickets. Veteran leg-spinner Piyush Chawla also chipped in with one wicket, to take his overall IPL wickets tally to 184, which is now the second highest by any bowler, overtaking Dwayne Bravo (183).

While chasing 170, the hosts had a horrible start as they lost three huge wickets of Ishan Kishan (13), Naman Dhir (11) and Rohit Sharma (11) as they scored just 46 runs in the powerplay. Kolkata bowlers kept things tight as they removed three more batters—Tilak Varma (4), Nehal Wadhera (6) and captain Hardik (1) before 12 overs.

Towards the end, Suryakumar Yadav played a fighting knock of 56 runs, but the hosts lost the match by 24 runs against two-time champions KKR. With the ball, Sunil Narine, Varun Chakarvarthy, Andre Russell scalped two wickets each for KKR. While, Mitchell Starc picked a four-wicket haul. With this defeat, Mumbai are almost out from the IPL 2024 playoffs race.
