IPL 2024 updated points table, Orange Cap & Purple cap after match 60, KKR vs MI

After defeating MI, KKR became the first team to qualify for the IPL 2024 playoffs.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) defeated Mumbai Indians (MI) by 18 runs in rain-marred 60th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 to become first team to qualify for the playoffs.

After winning the toss and electing to field first in a covered pitch, MI bowling unit restricted the hosts to 157/7 in 16 overs. The game was cut-short to 16 overs both sides due to rain playing spoilsport at the beginning.

With contributions from Venkatesh Iyer (42), Nitish Rana (33), Andre Russell (24) and Rinku Singh (20), KKR managed to cross the 150-run mark, which proved to be enough while defending.

For MI, Piyush Chawla and Jasprit Bumrah took two wickets each. While overseas pacer Nuwan Thushara and young seamer Anshul Kamboj bagged one scalp each.

While chasing 158, Mumbai openers Rohit Sharma (19) and Ishan Kishan (42) added 65 runs for the opening wicket. Suryakumar Yadav (11) and skipper Hardik Pandya (2) and Tim David (0) fell in quick successions as the visitors slumped to 101/5 in 13 overs after a steady start provided by their openers.

Towards the end, Kolkata bowlers took wickets at regular intervals as they restricted Mumbai to 139/8. The hosts won the match by 18 runs and also Iyer-led KKR became the first side to qualify for the playoffs.

After winning the match against Mumbai, Shreyas Iyer-led Kolkata solidified their position at top of the points table with 18 points and NRR of 1.428. With this victory, KKR became the first team to qualify for the playoffs.

Despite suffering a defeat, Hardik Pandya-led Mumbai remained at the ninth position with eight points and negative NRR of 0.271. The five-time champions are already eliminated from the ongoing tournament.

Meanwhile, the Rajasthan Royals are ranked second with 16 points to their name. Sanju Samson-led RR is just one win away from qualifying for the playoffs. Sunrisers Hyderabad and defending champions Chennai Super Kings are slotted in third and fourth positions, respectively.

On the other hand, the Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants are placed fifth and sixth with 12 points each. Royal Challengers Bengaluru are positioned at the seventh place with 10 points. 

Last year’s runners-up the Gujarat Titans, hold eighth spot with 10 points. While the Punjab Kings are languishing at the bottom of the IPL 2024 standings after the end of match No. 60 between Kolkata and Mumbai.

After the end of match No. 60, there were no changes seen in the IPL 2024 Orange Cap Leaderboard. Former RCB skipper Virat Kohli continues to stay at the top with runs. Chennai opener Ruturaj Gaikwad is in second place with 541 runs to his name.

Hyderabad overseas opener Travis Head remained at the fourth position with 533 runs. Meanwhile, Gujarat young batter Sai Sudharsan and Rajasthan skipper Sanju Samson are placed in the in the fourth and fifth positions, respectively. Sudharsan has scored 527 runs, while Samson has 471 runs to his name.

After the end of the KKR vs MI clash, there were few changes seen in the IPL 2024 Purple Cap Leaderboard.

Mumbai pacer Jasprit Bumrah dethroned Punjab speedster Harshal Patel to claim the No. 1 spot. Bumrah, who took two wickets against KKR, took his tally to 20 wickets. Despite both the bowlers having 20 wickets each, Bumrah holds the Purple Cap currently because of having better economy than Harshal.

Meanwhile, Kolkata’s spinner Varun Chakarvarthy, who scalped two wickets against Mumbai, continues to be at third position, but now with 18 wickets. His teammate, Harshit Rana jumped to the fifth position with 15 wickets. Rana took two scalps against five-time champions MI.

Punjab’s left-arm speedster Arshdeep Singh is ranked fourth with 16 wickets to his name after the end of match No. 60 in the IPL 2024.
