Punjab Kings defeated Rajasthan Royals by five wickets in 65th match of the IPL 2024.

In match No. 65 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, Punjab Kings (PBKS) restricted Rajasthan Royals (RR) to a below-par total of 144/9 in 20 overs in Guwahati on May 15. While chasing, skipper Sam Curran played a match-winning knock as Punjab won the match by five wickets.

After winning the toss and opting to bat first, Rajasthan had a poor night with the bat, as none of their batters registered a fifty. Riyan Parag played a crucial knock of 48 runs and Ravichandran Ashwin chipped in with 28 runs and helped the Royals cross the 140-run mark. For Punjab, skipper Sam Curran, Harshal Patel, and Rahul Chahar bagged two wickets each.

While defending 145, Rajasthan bowlers took three early wickets – Prabhsimran Singh (6), Rilee Rossouw (22) and Shashank Singh (0) as Punjab crumbled to 39/3 in the first six overs. The Royals bowlers kept things tight as they removed Jonny Bairstow (14) in the eighth over. Punjab reached 63/4 after the end of the first 10 overs.

However, skipper Sam Curran then played a match-winning unbeaten knock 41-ball 63 along with Ashutosh Sharma (17*) as Punjab registered a five-wicket win over Rajasthan.

After losing the match against Punjab, Sanju Samson-led RR stayed in second place with 16 points. The Samson-led side are already qualified for the IPL 2024 playoffs. RR still have a game left in the league stage and if they win it, they’ll ensure a top-two finish.

Following a win against Rajasthan, the Sam Curran-led PBKS jumped to ninth spot with 10 points to their name in the IPL 2024 standings. Punjab are already eliminated from the ongoing tournament.

Meanwhile, two-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders continue to stay at the top with 19 points. Shreyas Iyer-led Kolkata have already qualified for the playoffs. Defending champions Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad are ranked third and fourth respectively with 14 points each. Chennai are ranked higher because higher NRR from Hyderabad.

The Delhi Capitals remained in the fifth position with 14 points to their name. The Capitals have played all their league-stage matches. Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Lucknow Super Giants are slotted in sixth and seventh positions respectively with 12 points each. 

Meanwhile, the Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians are ranked at the eighth and tenth positions, respectively. Both the franchise are already eliminated from the ongoing edition.

After the end of match No. 65, there is just one change in the Orange Cap Leaderboard. Rajasthan’s Riyan Parag, who scored 48 runs against Punjab, jumped to fourth place with 531 runs to his name.

Meanwhile, Bengaluru opener Virat Kohli continues to stay at the top with 661 runs to his name. Kohli is the first player to breach the 600-run mark in the IPL 2024.

Chennai skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad is ranked second with 583 runs. On the other hand, Hyderabad overseas opener Travis Head and Gujarat’s Sai Sudharsan remained at the third and fifth spots, respectively. Head has smashed 533 runs, while Sudharsan has scored 527 runs till now.

After the end of RR vs. PBKS, there are two changes in the IPL 2024 Purple Cap Leaderboard. Punjab seamer Harshal Patel, who bagged two wickets against Rajasthan, dethroned Mumbai pacer Jasprit Bumrah to claim the No. 1 spot. Harshal has 22 wickets, whereas Bumrah, who is now ranked second, has 20 scalps to his name.

Rajasthan’s leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, who took two wickets in the game, jumped to fourth position with 17 wickets to his name. Meanwhile, Kolkata’s spinner Varun Chakaravarthy is placed third with 18 wickets. Delhi’s Khaleel Ahmed is slotted at the fifth spot with 17 wickets.
