IPL 2024: Shubman Gill handed INR 12 lakhs fine for slow over-rate during CSK vs GT clash

Shubman Gill becomes the first captain to be fined for slow-over rate in IPL 2024.
Match No. 7 of the Indian Premier League 2024 saw a one-sided contest between defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Gujarat Titans (GT) at M. A. Chidambaram Stadium. It was yet another game that was won by the home team, but the 2022 champions had a poor day on the field. CSK smashed them by a margin of 63 runs. With this win, Ruturaj Gaikwad and his men have climbed to the top of the table with a perfect record and also boast the best NRR in the competition.
On the other hand, Shubman Gill and his team have to address a number of things that were exposed during the match. Their bowlers leaked runs; there were some dropped catches as well and then the batters couldn’t keep up with the required run rate, which forced them to suffer a loss. However, not just the loss; skipper Gill was also fined after the game.
IPL 2024: Shubman Gill fined for INR 12 lakh for a slow-over rate against CSK
It was an off-day for the GT captain as his team conceded a massive total of 206 runs in the first innings on a pitch that was two-paced. Then, he got out cheaply. Later, he was fined INR 12 lakhs for a slow over-rate. Gill became the first captain in IPL 2024 to be fined for a slow over-rate.
Notably, this is his first offence, which is why he has been fined. But, if he finds himself guilty again in the tournament, he can possibly face a one-match ban as well. An IPL statement confirmed that, “As it was his team’s first offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, Gill was fined Rs 12 lakhs.”
It was only the second game for the 26-year-old as a captain in the IPL. He started well with a win against the Mumbai Indians, but lost his second game. CSK posted a massive total with some good batting displays. Ruturaj Gaikwad (46 off 36), Rachin Ravindra (46 off 20) and Shivam Dube (51 off 23) made the major contributions. In reply, GT managed 143/8 and lost the game. Sai Sudharsan (37 off 31) was the top scorer for them. GT will now face Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 31 in Ahmedabad.
