IPL 2024: Who has replaced Wanindu Hasaranga in Sunrisers Hyderabad squad?

Wanindu Hasaranga has been ruled out of entire IPL 2024 with heel injury.

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have announced replacement for injured Wanindu Hasaranga for the rest of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 on April 9. The veteran player was set to represent the Hyderabad franchise for the first time in his IPL career after being bought by the franchise for Rs 1.5 crores at the 2024 mini-auction, which was held in December 2023. 

Earlier, Hasaranga played for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) franchise for two IPL editions. RCB acquired the services of Sri Lankan spinner Hasaranga for a whopping price of Rs 10.75 crores at the IPL 2022 mega-auction.

Hasaranga had a brilliant maiden season for Bengaluru. He took 26 wickets in IPL 2022. However, he couldn’t replicate his success in 2023 season, following which he was released.

Why Wanindu Hasranga is not taking part in IPL 2024?

The Sri Lankan cricketer was last seen in action during the white-ball series against Bangladesh in March 2024. Hasaranga bagged two wickets in one T20I and took six wickets in the ODI series.

However, some reports suggested that the leg-spinner played both series in pain as he was suffering from a heel injury, which later cost him from playing in the IPL 2024.

Vijayakanth Viyaskanth replaces Wanindu Hasranga in SRH squad

SRH have signed Sri Lankan leg-spinner Vijayakanth Viyaskanth as a replacement for injured Hasaranga for the rest of the tournament.

Vijayakanth has represented Sri Lanka in just one T20I match so far. The young leg-spinner was bought for Rs 50 lakhs by the Hyderabad-based franchise.

The announcement was made on the SRH official handle ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), where they captioned:  “Wanindu Hasaranga will be unavailable for the season due to injury. We would like to wish him a speedy recovery. Sri Lankan spinner Vijayakanth Viyaskanth has joined the squad as his replacement for the rest of #IPL2024. Welcome, Viyaskanth.
