Hardik Pandya was fined INR 24 lakh for a slow over rate in the MI vs GT clash.

Mumbai Indians (MI) and Gujarat Titans (GT) played a thrilling match on Tuesday, May 6, in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. GT won a thrilling three-wicket win via the DLS (Duckworth-Lewis-Stein) method in a rain-affected game. After the match, Mumbai’s playing 11, including the impact player, and Gujarat coach Ashish Nehra, were fined.

The encounter took place at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. GT skipper Shubman Gill won the toss and opted to bowl first in the clash. The visitors restricted MI to just 155/8 in the first innings with brilliant teamwork in bowling. Will Jacks was the only MI batter to score a half-century for the side.

Later, Gill slammed 43 runs for the Titans while Jos Buttler added 30 runs. Trent Boult and Jasprit Bumrah picked up two wickets each to send GT batters on the back foot. The match was affected by rain after the 18th over of the second innings. Later, it was reduced by one over, and GT got a revised target of 147, 15 runs off the final over.

Why were MI players and Ashish Nehra fined after the MI vs GT clash?

The MI vs GT encounter made headlines due to the hefty fines imposed on members of both teams. Notably, MI captain Hardik Pandya was fined Rs 24 lakh for a slow over rate. His team committed the offence for the second time.

MI’s playing XI, including the impact player, were fined 25 percent of their match fees. The IPL governing council announced the fines in an official statement.

“As it was his team’s second offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, Pandya was fined INR 24 lakhs. The rest of the members of the Playing XI, including the Impact Player and the concussion substitute, were each individually fined either INR 6 lakh or 25 per cent of their respective match fees, whichever is lesser”, an official statement from the IPL government council read.

Additionally, GT head coach Ashish Nehra was fined 25 percent of his match fees. He has also received a demerit point for violating the IPL Code of Conduct. Notably, Nehra was seen arguing with the match officials during the match. That’s why he has been fined.

“Ashish Nehra, Head Coach, Gujarat Titans, has been fined 25 per cent of his match fees and has also accumulated one demerit point for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct. He admitted to the Level 1 offence under Article 2.20 – which pertains to the conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game – and accepted the Match Referee’s sanction”, the statement further added.

Meanwhile, GT also leapfrogged MI on the IPL 2025 points table after the match by earning two crucial points. They jumped to the top spot in the updated team standings. While Boult and Bumrah did a wonderful job in the pace department, Chahar failed to defend 15 runs off the final over.

The encounter went to the final ball, where GT needed one run off one ball. Arshad Khan managed to sneak a single to drive GT to a crucial victory.
