Jasprit Bumrah was the leading wicket taker in the BGT 2024-25.

Jasprit Bumrah has been India‘s spearhead fast bowler for years. His importance in the team was evident once again in the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25, where India lost the five-match series 3-1 despite Bumrah’s record-breaking 32 wickets.

Bumrah played a key role in India’s historic win in Perth, dismantling Australia‘s batting order in the first innings. He maintained his strong form throughout the series and became the most successful Indian bowler in Australia, surpassing Kapil Dev’s wicket tally.

However, injury problems began during Australia’s first innings of the Sydney test when the star pacer left the field after bowling just one over following the lunch break on day 2.

Bumrah came out to bat in the second innings but didn’t bowl in Australia’s second innings. Scans later confirmed that Bumrah has a back strain, and will need rest to recover.

A recent report has surfaced about his potential non-participation in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

Jasprit Bumrah to be sidelined until first week of March – Reports

According to a report in The Indian Express, Bumrah is expected to miss the group matches of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 due to back swelling. A decision on his participation in the knockout stages (if India advances) will be made later.

“He (Bumrah) will be going to NCA for his rehabilitation. The initial report says he doesn’t have a fracture but has swelling on his back. So the NCA will monitor his recovery and he will be there for three weeks. But even after that, he will have to play a match or two, even if they are practice games organised to check his match fitness,” a source told The Indian Express.

India will begin their campaign against Bangladesh on February 20 in Dubai. They will then play Pakistan on February 23 and New Zealand on March 2 to complete the group stage.

If India reaches the semi-final, they will play it on March 4 in Dubai.

On a positive note, India have received a boost with Mohammed Shami’s return to the T20I squad for the England series.
