Saina Nehwal said people in India shouldn’t argue with each other regarding different sports.
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) star cricketer Angkrish Raghuvanshi recently mocked Indian badminton legend Saina Nehwal in a now-deleted social media post on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter).
The youngster mocked India’s Olympic bronze medalist Nehwal when she claimed that sports like badminton, tennis, and basketball are physically more demanding than cricket. The legendary badminton player also criticized Indian fans for always supporting cricket over other sports.
Reacting to Nehwal’s comments, KKR star Raghuvanshi wrote, “Let’s see how she goes when Bumrah bowls 150k’s bumper at her head.”
The young cricketer deleted his controversial tweet after facing heavy criticism for his poor remark. Raghuvanshi also accepted that it was his immature humour.
He also expressed his regret for his actions and apologized for the comment on the Indian Badminton icon.
Bumrah won’t be able to take my smash: Saina Nehwal fires back with a direct response
During an interview on Shubankar Mishra’s podcast, Nehwal didn’t shy away from giving a direct response to Raghuvanshi’s remark regarding her. The badminton legend countered the KKR’s player claim by stating that if she had played eight years of cricket, she might be capable of facing a world-class bowler like Jasprit Bumrah.
Nehwal also said that if Bumrah was playing badminton, then he wouldn’t be able to take her smash. Saina further asserted that fans should give value to sports other than cricket as well.
“How will you become Virat at that level? How will you become Rohit Sharma? So many players have to become like them. They can’t. Only a few of them are like that. But I just feel that it’s more of a skill-based sport. And bowlers, I agree. I won’t die there. Why would I face Jasprit Bumrah anyways? If I had been playing for 8 years maybe I would have answered Jasprit Bumrah,” Nehwal said.
“If Jasprit Bumrah plays badminton with me maybe he won’t be able to take my smash. We should not fight with ourselves in our own country for these things. That’s what I want to say. Every sport is best in its place. But I want to say give value to other sports as well. Otherwise, where will we get sporting culture from? And cricket, Bollywood will always be our focus,” the Olympic bronze medalist concluded.
