Jofra Archer hasn’t played any international cricket since March 2023.
England ace pacer Jofra Archer is in line to be selected for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024, which is going to be played from June 2 in the Caribbean Islands and the USA. The defending champions are drawn in Group B of the marquee tournament alongside arch-rivals Australia, Scotland, Namibia, and Oman.
England will begin their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign against Scotland on June 4 at the Kensington Oval in Barbados. Their next fixture will be against mighty Australia on June 8 at the very same venue.
The right-arm speedster Archer hasn’t played any professional cricket since March 2023 because of a stress fracture on his right elbow. The 29-year-old last played during the Indian Premier League 2023 for five-time champions Mumbai Indians, where he bagged only two wickets in five matches.
It’s all about getting himself ready for that T20 World Cup: ECB managing director Rob Key
England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) managing director Rob Key opened up that their whole plan with Archer is to make him play white-ball cricket this summer. He added that the ECB is making every possible effort to make right-arm pacer ready for the upcoming T20 World Cup in June.
However, in a major setback, Key said that Archer will be out of action from test cricket till 2025, and the management hopes that in their next English summer, the now 29-year-old may play against India and then against Australia.
“The whole plan with Jofra is he is going to play white-ball cricket this summer. Then hopefully next summer when we play India then the Ashes [in Australia] we get him back for Test cricket,” Rob Key told Sky Sports.
“It’s all about getting himself ready for that T20 World Cup. He’ll hopefully play the Pakistan [T20] series [in May], but it’s all fingers crossed with Jofra at the moment. What we’re going to do is take it slower [rather] than trying to go too quickly so we get him back for not just a short period, but a long period,” Key added.
He bowled really well: Rob Key on Jofra Archer during his 10-day pre-season camp in India
Recently, Archer was in India alongside English county side Sussex in Bengaluru for a 10-day pre-season camp. The Sussex side played a few practice matches in Alur. The 29-year-old English cricketer played for Karnataka as a substitute player, and he bagged two wickets during a two-day practice match.
“Jofra’s been out at Sussex’s pre-season in India and bowled quickly out there. He bowled really well. He’s now just gone back to the Caribbean, where he will play a little bit of club cricket, stuff like that,” Key said.
It is understood that the England management is carefully monitoring Archer’s progress as they want to ensure his participation in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 as it will give a boost to their bowling line-up.
