Kane Williamson hints he is not certain to appear in the T20 World Cup 2026

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson has said that he is not sure about his future in the shortest international format and that he doesn’t know where he stands with regard to the T20 World Cup 2026, which will be hosted by India and Sri Lanka.

Williamson’s comments came after his side’s group-stage exit in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and USA. New Zealand failed to qualify for the Super 8 round, with West Indies and Afghanistan going through from Group C. The Kiwis suffered defeats at the hands of West Indies and Afghanistan, which played a role in their ouster in the first round of the competition.

The 33-year-old Williamson had led New Zealand brilliantly in the last two editions of the T20 World Cup. They finished as runners-up in the 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE and lost in the semi-final in the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia.

However, this time, the Black Caps have had a shocking group-stage exit.

Fast bowler Trent Boult has already confirmed that the ongoing tournament was his last T20 World Cup. What about Williamson? Will he appear in the T20 World Cup 2026?

When asked this question in Trinidad after New Zealand’s group matches came to an end, Williamson said his focus in the next year will be on other formats with the World Test Championship and Champions Trophy in view.

“Oh, I don’t know. There’s a bit of time between now and then, so it’s about regrouping as a side. We’ve got red-ball cricket over the next year basically, so it’s back into some other international formats, and we’ll see where things land,” the Kiwi skipper said.

Kane Williamson has to make a decision now after a disappointing World Cup: Fleming

Former New Zealand skipper Stephen Fleming reckons it’s time for Williamson to make a decision on his T20I future.

Fleming told ESPNcricinfo, “It hasn’t really been questioned over here, due to his genius with the bat, but he has to make a decision now after a disappointing World Cup. What does his future hold? Is it all three formats, is it franchise cricket, is it family time? He will be getting to that point where he starts making decisions that have other influences, whereas before it was cricket and cricket only.”
