Suryakumar Yadav played his last international game in March.

At the start of 2026, Suryakumar Yadav was leading the Indian Cricket Team in T20Is and was also a crucial part of the playing XI. The 36-year-old also guided the Men in Blue to their third ICC T20 World Cup title in March. In the tournament, he played 9 games and scored 242 runs at an average of 30, with a best of 84. He was the third-highest scorer for the Men in the Blue in the competition.

However, Suryakumar Yadav was stripped of his captaincy earlier this year, in June. Soon, Shreyas Iyer was named the new captain of the Men in Blue in the shortest format of international cricket.

It was later revealed that the 36-year-old was removed as the side’s captain due to a prolonged batting slump. The Mumbai Indians star also had a lacklustre season in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. Suryakumar Yadav positioned himself as one of the most consistent and prolific batters in the T20 format, and any performance below the mark was seen as poor.

Earlier this month, he also lost his position in Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy side. He was also omitted from Mumbai’s squad for the opening round of the 2026–27 domestic season. Mumbai senior men’s chief selector Rajesh Pawar later stated that Yadav was not selected in the team because he had not been active in red-ball cricket for the last 18 months. Suryakumar played his last first-class game in February 2025.

Siddhesh Lad has been named the new captain, while Ayush Mhatre will play as his deputy. However, despite losing his place on international and domestic sides, the 36-year-old is set to make an appearance on the pitch.

As per Indian Express, Suryakumar Yadav has decided to return to cricket action by participating in the President’s Cup, a local tournament starting on Sunday. The 36-year-old might aim to get back in form while playing in the tournament and reclaim a spot in the teams he has been omitted from.

Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav could also be potentially selected in the Mumbai 50-over (Vijay Hazare Trophy) and T20 (Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy) squads, depending on his availability and form.

Thus, the President’s Cup could help him show his form after a difficult IPL season, in which he scored only 270 runs in 13 matches.
