Mark Wood replaces James Anderson as England name squad for 2nd test vs West Indies

Mark Wood’s last appearance for England in test cricket came against India earlier this year.
The Ben Stokes-led England cricket team added speedster Mark Wood to their squad for the second match of the ongoing three-match test series against the West Indies. The second test will be played from July 18 to July 22 at Trent Bridge, Nottingham.
The right-arm pacer Wood replaced legendary pacer James Anderson, who retired from international cricket after the conclusion of the first test match against the West Indies at the Lord’s on July 12.
The Stokes-led England won the opening test match by an innings and 114 runs. Right-arm pacer Gus Atkinson was named Player of the Match for his brilliant match figures of 12/106. Atkinson scalped seven wickets in the first innings and then five more in the second innings against the West Indies in the first test.
We’ll look to make him available for selection for the third test: Rob Key on Mark Wood
The English seamer Wood last played a test match for England against India in March 2024 and was excluded from the squad for the first test match against the West Indies. It is to be noted that Wood was part of the England T20I squad in the recently concluded ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
The England men’s managing director Rob Key, while announcing the squad, hinted that they would try to make Wood available for the selection for the final match of the test series against the West Indies.
“Once you come out of T20 cricket, then you’re going into Test cricket very quickly… there’s a period there where you can’t just throw someone into a Test match,” England men’s managing director, Rob Key, said when the squad was announced.
“Rest is probably not the right term but we’ll look to make him available for selection for the second and third Tests, hopefully,” Rob Key added.
England squad for second test:
Ben Stokes (captain), Gus Atkinson, Shoaib Bashir, Harry Brook, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Dan Lawrence, Dillon Pennington, Ollie Pope, Matthew Potts, Joe Root, Jamie Smith, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood
West Indies squad:
Kraigg Brathwaite(captain), Mikyle Louis, Kirk McKenzie, Alick Athanaze, Kavem Hodge, Joshua Da Silva(w), Jason Holder, Kevin Sinclair, Alzarri Joseph, Gudakesh Motie, Shamar Joseph, Tevin Imlach, Jeremiah Louis, Jayden Seales, Zachary McCaskie
