Matheesha Pathirana has picked up eight wickets in the IPL 2024 till now.
In match No. 29 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) star overseas pacer Matheesha Pathirana grabbed the spotlight by delivering a match-winning spell against their arch-rivals Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on April 15.
The ‘Baby Malinga’ led the CSK bowling line-up from the front by putting a sensational performance. He picked up four wickets and conceded just 28 runs in his quota of four overs. The 21-year-old speedster took the wickets of star MI batters Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, and Romario Shephed.
His spell dismantled MI’s star-studded batting line-up during their run-chase of 207 runs as hosts felt short by 20 runs in the ‘EL Clasico’ of the IPL.
Matheesha Pathirana explains his wicket celebration gesture
The Sri Lankan fast bowler is now becoming a hot topic for everyone for his celebratory gestures every time he gets a wicket. Pathirana’s gestures have gone viral all over social media, as the CSK pacer did them four times during the MI vs CSK match on Sunday.
Following the high-voltage clash on Sunday, CSK’s Shivam Dube interviewed and asked Pathirana to explain his celebration. Dube asked Pathirana if he mimics WWE Superstar The Undertaker while celebrating a wicket, but Pathirana later clarified that he imitates legendary footballer Cristiano Ronaldo’s celebration.
“So that’s why you become The Undertaker?” Dube questioned as both the cricketers broke into laughter.
“No, it is not the undertaker. I follow Cristiano Ronaldo and try to do his celebration. I try to close my eyes. I can’t do that, unfortunately,” Pathirana told Dube during their fun interaction at the Wankhede Stadium.

It is to be noted that Pathirana missed the opening fixture against Royal Challengers Bengaluru as he was recovering from hamstring injury which he suffered during the Bangladesh series in March.
