Hardik Pandya has returned back to his previous IPL franchise MI in an all-cash trade deal from GT.

Veteran India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has offered some useful insight into the mega trade deal that happened between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Gujarat Titans (GT), which saw Hardik Pandya coming back into the MI fold ahead of IPL 2024 auction.

Even though it has been a few days after Hardik Pandya’s spectacular move to the Mumbai Indians, the buzz surrounding the most expensive trade deal has not subsided. Hardik Pandya became the third captain after Ravi Ashwin and Ajinkya Rahane to be traded in the Indian Premier League.

Mumbai Indians (MI) first traded Cameron Green to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for INR 17.50 crores. Mumbai Indians have released Jofra Archer (8 Cr), Riley Meredith and Jhye Richardson. This freed up the money they needed to bring Hardik Pandya back into the fold from Gujarat Titans. GT CEO Vikram Solanki revealed that Pandya had talked to them about leaving the franchise and going back to Mumbai Indians.

While various ideas circulated regarding Pandya’s transfer and the money involved, Ravichandran Ashwin provided some important insight into the trade arrangement. He went into detail on what happens in a trade involving two teams and a player. He was referring to Hardik Pandya in this scenario.

A player can get 10% to 50% of the amount he is transferred for: Ravi Ashwin

Ashwin mentioned on his YouTube channel that the team can provide the player with 10-40% of the agreed-upon fee. He went on to say that MI had purchased Hardik Pandya’s contract from GT for the publicly reported figure of Rs 15 crore. He went on to say that an undisclosed sum is also at stake, indicating that it might be split between the player and the team (selling the player).

“I’ll tell you about the trade deal as I myself have been involved in one. A player can get 10% to 50% of the amount he is transferred for. For example, Mumbai Indians will buy Hardik Pandya’s contract from GT, for Rs 15 cr as told to the public. And the player considered their commodity, for which they had to give another amount, which is the undisclosed amount in the news right now“, Ashwin explained in a video on his YouTube channel.

Ashwin opined that it wasn’t necessary for the franchise to disclose that amount to the public, coining it as an ‘internal affair.’ Notably, Ashwin was traded from Punjab Kings to Delhi Capitals before the IPL 2020 auction.
