The Mitchell Marsh-led Australia will face India on June 24 in St Lucia for their Super 8 fixture.
Less than an hour after Australia suffered a huge upset at the hands of Afghanistan in their Super 8 match in St Vincent, Australia captain Mitchell Marsh laid down a strong warning to Rohit Sharma’s Team India for their upcoming fixture, which is virtually a must-win game for the Aussies.
In the AFG vs AUS match of the Super 8 round, Rashid Khan’s team emerged victorious by 21 runs at the Arnos Vale Ground, Kingstown.
This result means that Afghanistan, who had lost to India, remain alive in the race for the semi-finals of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 and Australia will need to beat India to put themselves in a safer position because the AUS vs IND clash will be played before Afghanistan’s match against Bangladesh.
India have a significantly better net run rate (+2.425) than both Australia (+0.223) and Afghanistan (-0.650), so the Men In Blue already have a foot in the semi-finals. They only need to avoid a huge defeat at the hands of the Aussies.
Mitchell Marsh gives a resounding warning to India
The AUS vs IND match is effectively a must-win game for the Aussies and their captain has given a resounding warning to the Asian giants.
At the post-match presentation of the AFG vs AUS match, Marsh said, “We need to win the next match, and there’s no better team to do it against.”
Australia defeated India twice in knockout matches last year: the World Test Championship final and the World Cup 2023 final.
Talking about the loss to Afghanistan, Marsh felt Afghanistan’s total of 148 was 20 runs too many than their liking on that pitch.
The Australian captain said, “They probably got 20 too many. Lot of teams have bowled first in this tournament. Don’t think it was won or lost at the toss. We had an off night on the field. Wasn’t the easiest of wickets but both teams played on it. As I said, we got outplayed today.”
