England won the inaugural edition of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.
The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup is one of the most prestigious tournaments in women’s cricket. Its inaugural edition was played in 2009 in England.
So far, nine editions of this competition have been played in various parts of the world. Only West Indies have hosted the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup twice.
Until now, only four teams have tasted success in winning the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.
In this article, we will talk about the teams who have won the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup trophy and rank them based on the number of times they have done it.
List of the teams with the most ICC Women’s T20 World Cup titles:
4. New Zealand Women – 1 title
Despite making it to the finals of first two editions of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, it took New Zealand women nine editions to win their first ever title. New Zealand won their maiden Women’s T20 World Cup title in 2024 defeating South Africa in the final in Dubai.
New Zealand crushed South Africa by 32 runs in the final to lift their first ever ICC Cricket World Cup title. Until this, New Zealand had not won a single ICC Cricket World Cup title nor in men’s or women’s cricket history.
3. West Indies Women – 1 title
After being knocked out in the semi-finals of three consecutive editions (2010, 2012, and 2014), West Indies finally won their maiden ICC Women’s T20 World Cup trophy in the 2016 edition that was played in India. That was the same year when the West Indies men’s team also won the men’s T20 World Cup trophy.
After finishing in second place in the group stage, West Indies met New Zealand in the semi-final and won by six runs.
Then, they faced then-defending champions Australia in the final and beat them by eight wickets to clinch the title. Hayley Matthews won the Player of the Match award in the final, while captain Stafanie Taylor was the Player of the Tournament.
2. England Women – 1 title
The inaugural season of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup was held in England in 2009, and it was one of the only two instances where the host nation won the trophy. England did it under the captaincy of Charlotte Edwards.
After finishing the group stage at the top, England faced Australia in the semi-finals and beat them by eight wickets in a last-over thriller. They faced New Zealand in the final and registered a comfortable win by six wickets to clinch the title.
England’s Claire Taylor ended as the second-highest run-getter with 199 runs and won the Player of the Tournament award.
1. Australia Women – 6 titles
Australia are the most successful team in ICC Women’s T20 World Cup history as they have won six out of eight tournaments so far. They have achieved these six titles with two hat-tricks.
Australia won their maiden title in 2010 under Alex Blackwell, beating New Zealand in the final. Then, they defended their title in 2012 under Jodie Fields’ captaincy, beating England in the final. Meg Lanning led them to glory in 2014 in Bangladesh, beating England once again in the final.
The next three titles came in 2018, 2020, and 2023, all under Lanning’s captaincy. In 2020, Australia became the second team to win the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup at home, as they defeated India in the final at the MCG.
