Mumbai Indians (MI) have appointed former India batter Robin Uthappa as their new batting coach ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 season. The five-time champions have brought Uthappa into their coaching setup as part of a major revamp following a disappointing 2026 campaign.
Uthappa returns to Mumbai Indians after nearly 18 years, having represented the franchise in the inaugural IPL season in 2008. This will also be his first major coaching role in the IPL.

Uthappa played 14 matches for MI in 2008, scoring 320 runs. During his IPL career, he also represented Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
He finished his IPL career with 4,952 runs in 205 matches. His best season came in 2014, when he scored 660 runs for KKR and won the Orange Cap. He was also part of India’s 2007 T20 World Cup-winning squad.
Apart from Uthappa, MI have appointed Mitchell McClenaghan as bowling coach, T. Dilip as fielding coach and Dhawal Kulkarni as development bowling coach.
McClenaghan represented MI between 2015 and 2020 and was part of four IPL title-winning campaigns. Kulkarni also won two IPL titles with the franchise in 2013 and 2020.
These appointments follow Kieron Pollard’s promotion as head coach and the departures of Lasith Malinga, Paras Mhambrey and Carl Hopkinson. Pollard has replaced Mahela Jayawardene, who previously led the franchise’s coaching setup.
Mumbai Indians finished ninth in the IPL 2026 points table. The franchise will now hope that their new coaching group can help improve the team’s performance in the upcoming season.
Mumbai Indians will now prepare for the IPL 2027 mini-auction, scheduled for December 16, as they look to build a stronger team for the upcoming season.
