Namibia book tickets for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in Caribbean Islands and USA
Namibia have entered into the T20 World Cup for the third consecutive time.
With a 100% win record in the African regional qualifiers so far, Namibia have booked their place in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. T20I’s biggest spectacle will be held in the Caribbean Islands and the USA in June next year. Namibia have also confirmed their top 2 finish in the ongoing African regional qualifier event. They are currently at the top of the table with 10 points. The second team is yet to be finalised as the teams are left to play two more rounds in the qualifiers.
Namibia needed a win against Tanzania to secure the World Cup spot and they got a big margin over the inexperienced African side. Namibia thrashed Tanzania by 58 runs at Wanderers Cricket Ground in Windhoek. Namibian skipper Gerhard Erasmus had an all-round performance in the game and bowled a brilliant spell. Erasmus scored 21 runs in 19 balls with one four and one six. He also took 2 wickets and conceded just 17 runs.
Namibia thrashed Tanzania
Namibia posted 157 runs on the board, and JJ Smuts played a blistering knock of 40 runs in just 25 balls. Smuts smacked 4 sixes in his innings. Later on, Jon Nicol Loftie-Eaton finished the innings on high and played a 14-run cameo in 5 balls. Tanzania never looked comfortable chasing the target and after early blows, they focused on staying there at the crease for full 20 overs. Tanzania were restricted to just 99 runs in 20 overs.
Uganda, Kenya, Nigeria, and Zimbabwe are the other three teams still in the reckoning for a World Cup place in the upcoming tournament. Uganda and Kenya need wins in their respective games to secure a place in the mega T20I event. Zimbabwe and Nigeria also need victories to make a place in the tournament but their destiny is also dependent on other results as well. Uganda is currently second in the table with 6 points in 4 games.
This will be the third edition in a row Namibia will be partaking in the T20 World Cup. For the first time in the history of an ICC event, 20 teams will be taking part in the main event. ICC decided to increase the number of teams in ICC tournaments and a total of 20 teams will be playing in the T20 World Cup while 14 will be playing in the next ICC Cricket World Cup. The tournament will be played in June next year.
