Rishabh Pant made 37 runs in the first innings of the Perth test.

The much-anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 started on November 22 at the Optus Stadium in Perth. India won the toss and elected to bat first on a lively pitch with green grass on it, a decision that sparked mixed reactions from experts.

Many including Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar believed that bowling first would have been a safer option considering India’s inexperienced batting lineup. Mitchell Starc started the proceedings for the hosts by dismissing Yashasvi Jaiswal for a duck. Things quickly turned ugly for India with the scorecard reading 59/5.

Debutant Nitish Reddy displayed grit, top-scoring with a knock of 41 runs. Rishabh Pant and Nitish combined to add 48 runs for the seventh wicket to push India to the score of 150 runs. Josh Hazlewood starred for the hosts, picking up four wickets, including the prized wicket of Virat Kohli.

In a light-hearted moment during the intense contest, Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon was heard asking Rishabh Pant about his possible move in the upcoming IPL mega auction. Pant has been released by Delhi Capitals and will be up for grabs in the mega auction.

Lyon inquired with Pant, “Where are we going in the auction (IPL)” to which the Indian wicket-keeper laughingly replied “No idea.”

Meanwhile, at the time of writing, Australia are currently 14/1. Indian captain Jasprit Bumrah has dismissed debutant Nathan McSweeney for a score of 10.

India now face the daunting task of dismissing Australia cheaply. With the pitch assisting the fast bowlers India will expect the pace trio of Mohammed Siraj, Harshit Rana and Jasprit Bumrah to do what the Australian pacers did to them.

Teams:

India (Playing XI): Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Devdutt Padikkal, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant(w), Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Harshit Rana, Jasprit Bumrah (c), Mohammed Siraj

Australia (Playing XI): Usman Khawaja, Nathan McSweeney, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh, Alex Carey (wk), Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood.
