[Watch] Oman captain Aqib Ilyas takes a stunner to send Glenn Maxwell packing for a golden duck

Oman skipper Aqib Ilyas took an outstanding catch at cover to get rid of Glenn Maxwell.

Australian cricket team star batter Glenn Maxwell’s horrid batting form from the Indian Premier League 2024 has spilled into the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 as the right-hander bagged a golden duck in the AUS vs OMN match.

Australia kicked off their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign on Wednesday night with a 39-run win over Oman at the Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados.

Maxwell couldn’t make any contribution with the bat, although his failure was majorly down to a sensational catch from Oman captain Aqib Ilyas. Maxwell indeed had timed the ball well and if not for Ilyas’ interception, it would have likely gone for a boundary.

In the 9th over of Australia’s innings, medium pacer Mehran Khan dismissed Aussie skipper Mitchell Marsh. Out came Maxwell at number four. Mehran dished a harmless ball outside the off-stump which Maxwell hit from the middle of his bat, aiming for the cover boundary.

However, at the cover position, Ilyas threw himself to his left side and plucked the ball in the air while going low. For a moment, he was fully stretched in the air. It was an outstanding take from the Oman captain and it will go down as one of the best catches of this tournament.

Australia have started their tournament with a convincing 39-run victory in Barbados over Oman with Marcus Stoinis bagging the Man of the Match award for his all-round performance. He scored 67* off 36 balls that took Australia to 164, which proved too much for Oman. Stoinis then picked up three wickets while giving away only 19 runs in three overs. This was the second defeat for Oman in as many matches.
