Babar Azam was sacked from captaincy after Pakistan’s dismissal performance at the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.
The Pakistan Cricket Team has seen many ups and downs in the last year or so. From the musical chair of the chairman post to performance, from the sacking of Babar Azam from captaincy to suffering consecutive defeats under new captains, there is a lot happening within the Pakistan Cricket Team at the moment. And now, according to some media reports, the Pakistan Cricket Board is planning to reinstate Babar Azam as the captain.
Notably, the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 is all set to get underway in June. It will be co-hosted in West Indies and the USA. Shaheen Afridi was made the captain of T20I team, but his performance as captain has declined totally. Under him, Pakistan lost a T20 series against New Zealand 4-1, and then Shaheen’s Lahore Qalandars also ended the PSL 2024 at the bottom.
Babar Azam set to be re-appointed as Pakistan captain ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 – Reports
The PCB sacked Babar Azam after Pakistan’s horrible run in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in India. They couldn’t make it to the semis and won only four games out of nine. Hence, he was replaced as the captain. Shan Masood was named the test captain. However, Masood-led Pakistan suffered a 0-3 series defeat against Australia in his first series as the Test captain. Now with a mega ICC event coming up in June, the PCB wants to have an experienced captain.
Earlier, some reports claimed that Mohammad Rizwan was the frontrunner to be the new T20 captain. But now, some sources have confirmed that the chances of Babar becoming the all-format captain again have increased. The PCB has approached the 29-year-old for captaincy, but he is hesitant to accept the role after the way he was sacked earlier.
Meanwhile, it has also been learned that Babar is looking for reassurance from the board before taking responsibility. Meanwhile, if it happens, it won’t be a new thing in Pakistan cricket. There are many examples when a player has gotten the captaincy again in his career after being replaced.
Meanwhile, in the past few days, Imad Wasim and Mohammad Amir have also come out of retirement citing encouragement from the PCB. There are chances that both stars might be picked for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024.
