Kane Williamson scored only one run in two balls against West Indies.
New Zealand captain Kane Williamson recorded his second single-digit score in two matches as he was dismissed for only one run by West Indies’ left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie during their ICC T20 World Cup 2024 encounter.
On Wednesday night, at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad, Rovman Powell’s side sealed their place in the Super 8 round with their third win of the group stage. West Indies defeated New Zealand by 13 runs while defending 149.
Williamson, who had managed nine runs in their loss against Afghanistan a few days ago, suffered another low score.
Nicholas Pooran takes a calm juggling catch of Kane Williamson
The Kiwi skipper fell to a length delivery from Gudakesh Motie that turned a bit extra than Williamson anticipated, as he outside-edged his cut shot. It was a thick edge.
The ball hit wicket-keeper Nicholas Pooran on his chest but the keeper had the calmness and presence of mind to keep his eyes on the ball and catch it on the rebound. The celebrations from Pooran, Motie, and other West Indies players showed how big of a wicket it was.
Watch it here:
Talking about the match, the Kiwis had a strong hold over the hosts when West Indies were struggling at 112/9. However, a whirlwind finish from left-handed batsman Sherfane Rutherford, who smoked 68* off 39 balls, took them to 149.
Then, the West Indies bowlers kept a lid on the scoring rate of New Zealand and took regular wickets. Alzarri Joseph took a four-wicket haul and Motie took three wickets. West Indies, with three wins in three games, have qualified for the Super 8 while New Zealand are all but out of the qualification race.
