IPL 2026: Qualification scenarios of all teams explained

The top four teams will qualify for the IPL 2026 playoffs.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 has entered its business end, and all ten teams are now trying their best to secure their spot in the final four on the points table. As per the rules, the top four teams on the IPL points table qualify for the playoffs and get a chance to play in the final of the tournament.

The first two ranked teams play in Qualifier 1, where the winner goes straight into the final, and the loser of the game gets one more chance to make it into the final. The 3rd and 4th placed teams play in the Eliminator match, where the winner of the game goes into Qualifier 2, and the loser gets eliminated.

Qualifier 2 of the IPL sees the loser of Qualifier 1 and the winner of the Eliminator fighting it out to get into the final.

This IPL 2026 has been interesting in terms of the points table, as the top four teams have been holding onto their spots at the top of the table for the majority of the tournament. There are a few teams still having a chance to qualify in the top four, and let’s check out the possible qualification scenarios.

Qualification scenarios of all teams in IPL 2026

1. Royal Challengers Bengaluru – Qualified

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) hold the no. 1 spot in the IPL 2026 points table. They have won 9 games from 13 matches, gaining 18 points, and have a net run rate of +1.065. They have become the first team to book a berth in the playoffs.

RCB have one more game left in the league stage and if they win that match, they will finish in the top spot in the points table.

2. Gujarat Titans – Qualified

Shubman Gill’s Gujarat Titans (GT) are placed at the second spot on the IPL 2026 points table, with 9 wins from 14 games and a net run rate of +0.695. The 2022 IPL winners qualified for the playoffs after SRH’s victory over CSK in the 63rd match of the tournament.

3. Sunrisers Hyderabad – Qualified

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) take third spot in the points table. They have played 13 games and have won 8 matches to get 16 points and a net run rate of ++0.350. SRH qualified for the playoffs after defeating CSK in their 13th match of the league stage. Now, the Pat Cummins & Co. will aim for a top-two finish.

4. Rajasthan Royals – 1 win needed in 1 match

Rajasthan Royals (RR) have flourished under the captaincy of Riyan Parag and the guidance of Kumar Sangakkara this IPL season. They have done well to remain in the top four of the IPL 2026 points table for the majority of the season.

They now take the 4th spot as they have 14 points to their name from 13 games. RR can qualify for playoffs if they win their last match of the league stage.

5. Punjab Kings – 1 win in 1 match (need other results in their favour)

Punjab Kings (PBKS) had a brilliant start to their IPL 2026 season, winning the first six games in terrific fashion. However, in recent times, they have lost six matches in succession and see themselves at the fourth spot in the points table. They have played 13 games and have won 6 of them to get 13 points and a net run rate of +0.227.

In order to qualify for the playoffs, the PBKS need to win last match of the league stage. However, their qualification now depends on the results of other teams.

6. Kolkata Knight Riders – 1 win needed in 1 match (need other results in their favour)

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have done well to win five games and gain 13 points from 13 matches in IPL 2026. Their net run rate is +0.011, and they would need to win their remaining one game to reach the maximum of 15 points.

KKR will also need other teams to lose, and though mathematically they are in the race for the playoffs, things look tough for them in reality.

7. Chennai Super Kings – Eliminated

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have been eliminated from the tournament. Out of 14 games, they won six and lost eight. With 12 points, they stay in the seventh spot in the points table. They became the third team after MI and LSG to be eliminated.

8. Delhi Capitals – 1 win needed in 1 match (need other results in their favour)

Delhi Capitals (DC) have endured a similar fate in IPL 2026, as they had the previous season. They started off well with a string of wins, but have lost momentum midway through the tournament. After the win over RR, they are placed 8th with 6 wins from 13 games and 12 points to their name.

The Axar Patel-led side need to win their last match to get to 14 points and stay in contention for the playoffs. They would then want a few other results to go their way to ensure a top-four finish. Hence, their chances are very slim.

9. Mumbai Indians – Eliminated

The Mumbai Indians (MI) have had a horror run in IPL 2026. They lost too many matches in a row to find themselves with only 8 points to their name after 12 games and 4 wins. After their defeat against RCB on May 10 in Raipur, Hardik Pandya & Co. were out of the race to the playoffs. They can only reach 12 points.

10. Lucknow Super Giants – Eliminated

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) just didn’t get going this IPL 2026 season. They couldn’t get a string of wins and have 4 wins from 12 games and 8 points to their name, with a net run rate of -0.701.

On May 10, the Rishabh Pant-led side lost to Chennai Super Kings by five wickets, which crushed their hopes of reaching the playoffs. LSG were the first team to be eliminated from IPL 2026.
