IPL 2026: Qualification scenarios of all teams explained

The top four teams will qualify for the IPL 2026 playoffs.
The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 has entered its business end, and all ten teams are now trying their best to secure their spot in the final four on the points table. As per the rules, the top four teams on the IPL points table qualify for the playoffs and get a chance to play in the final of the tournament.
The first two ranked teams play in Qualifier 1, where the winner goes straight into the final, and the loser of the game gets one more chance to make it into the final. The 3rd and 4th placed teams play in the Eliminator match, where the winner of the game goes into Qualifier 2, and the loser gets eliminated.
Qualifier 2 of the IPL sees the loser of Qualifier 1 and the winner of the Eliminator fighting it out to get into the final.
This IPL 2026 has been interesting in terms of the points table, as the top four teams have been holding onto their spots at the top of the table for the majority of the tournament. There are a few teams still having a chance to qualify in the top four, and let’s check out the possible qualification scenarios.
Qualification scenarios of all teams in IPL 2026
1. Sunrisers Hyderabad – 1 wins needed in 3 matches

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), thanks to an explosive top order, are at the top of the points table. They have played 11 games and have won 7 matches to get 14 points and a net run rate of 0.737.
The SRH require just one win out of its remaining three games. A win will give SRH 16 points and qualification into the playoffs. However, if they win all three games, SRH will be on 20 points and will probably finish in the No. 1 spot and play in Qualifier 1.
2. Punjab Kings – 2 wins needed in 4 matches

Punjab Kings (PBKS) had a brilliant start to their IPL 2026 season, winning the first six games in terrific fashion. However, in recent times, they have lost three matches in succession and see themselves losing their No. 1 spot on the points table. They have played 10 games and have won 6 of them to get 13 points and a net run rate of 0.571.
In order to qualify for the playoffs, the PBKS need to win at least 2 games out of their remaining four games. This will give them 17 points and a finish in the top four. If they win all four games, they will end up with 21 points and play in Qualifier 1.
3. Royal Challengers Bengaluru – 2 wins needed in 4 matches

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) held the no. 2 spot for the first few weeks in the IPL 2026 points table. However, a few losses in recent times led to RCB slipping down to the third spot. They have won 6 games from 10 matches, gaining 12 points, and have a net run rate of 1.234.
For RCB to qualify for the playoffs, they need to win at least two games out of 4 remaining. This will give them 16 points and a spot in the playoffs. The maximum they can get is 20 points if they win all four remaining games.
4. Rajasthan Royals – 2 wins needed in 4 matches

Rajasthan Royals (RR) have flourished under the captaincy of Riyan Parag and the guidance of Kumar Sangakkara this IPL season. They have done well to remain in the top four of the IPL 2026 points table with 12 points to their name from 6 wins in 10 games.
RR will need two wins from their last four games to qualify for the IPL 2026 playoffs, given their net run rate of 0.510. The maximum points RR can achieve is 20 points if they win all of their remaining games.
5. Gujarat Titans – 2 wins needed in 4 matches

Shubman Gill’s Gujarat Titans (GT) are placed fifth on the IPL 2026 points table, with 6 wins from 10 games and a net run rate of -0.147. The 2022 IPL winners are just on the cusp of IPL playoffs qualification and just need that final push to achieve their goal.
For GT to qualify for the final four, they need to win 2 out of their last four games and get to 16 points. However, they can secure top-two qualification if they win all of their remaining games and gain 20 points.
6. Chennai Super Kings – 3 wins needed in 4 matches

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are in a tricky situation in the IPL 2026. After enduring a horrific initial run this season, they have bounced back and have 10 points to their name from 10 games and a net run rate of 0.151.
For the Ruturaj Gaikwad-led CSK to qualify for the playoffs, they need to win three of their last four games and get to 16 points, the magical number. Four wins in four games give them 18 points and more of a chance for playoff qualification.
7. Delhi Capitals – 3 wins needed in 3 matches (need other results to go in their favour as they can’t reach 16 points)

Delhi Capitals (DC) have endured a similar fate in IPL 2026, as they had the previous season. They started off well with a string of wins, but have lost momentum midway through the tournament. They are placed 8th with 4 wins from 11 games and 8 points to their name.
The Axar Patel-led side needs to win all three of their games to get to 14 points to stay in contention for playoffs. If they win all their three games, they would then want a few other results to go their way to ensure a top-four finish.
8. Kolkata Knight Riders – 4 wins needed in 4 matches

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have done well to win four games and gain 9 points from 10 matches in IPL 2026. Their net run rate is -0.169, and they would need to win all of their remaining four games to reach the maximum of 17 points.
KKR will also need other teams to lose, and though mathematically they are in the race for the playoffs, things look tough for them in reality.
9. Mumbai Indians – 4 wins needed in 4 matches (need other results to go in their favour as they can’t reach 16 points)

The Mumbai Indians (MI) have had a horror run in IPL 2026. They lost too many matches in a row to find themselves with only 6 points to their name after 10 games and 3 wins. Their net run rate is -0.649, which hinders their chances of qualification for the playoffs.
Even if the Hardik Pandya-led MI wins all of their remaining games, they will reach a maximum of 14 points. Historically, teams have qualified for the playoffs with 14 points, but several other results of other teams have to go their way for that to happen.
10. Lucknow Super Giants – 5 wins needed in 5 matches (need other results to go in their favor as they can’t reach 16 points)

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) just didn’t get going this IPL 2026 season. They couldn’t get a string of wins and have 3 wins from 10 games and 6 points to their name, with a net run rate of -0.934. Even if they win their remaining four games, LSG will reach 14 points.
Though LSG are mathematically still in the race for IPL 2026 playoffs, realistically, the Rishabh Pant-led team will not only have to win their remaining four games but also pray for other teams to lose theirs by big margins to get a sniff at the playoffs.
