Rahul Dravid’s tenure as India’s head coach ended in June this year.
Rahul Dravid‘s stint as the Indian cricket team’s head coach ended on a high with the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 victory on June 29 in Barbados, where India defeated South Africa in a thrilling final.
Under Dravid, India became the first team to remain undefeated in an entire men’s T20 World Cup tournament.
Rahul Dravid had taken over the head coach’s job from Ravi Shastri in 2021 and oversaw some highs and some lows.
In this period, India reached the final of ICC tournaments in all three formats – World Cup 2023, ICC World Test Championship and T20 World Cup, but lost two of them. India also went as far as the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2022 under Dravid.
Rahul Dravid says the lowest point of his coaching stint was the test series loss in South Africa on the 2021/22 tour
For Dravid, the World Cup 2023 final loss at home wasn’t his biggest setback; it was the test series defeat in South Africa on the 2021/22 tour.
After winning the first test in Centurion, India threw away a huge chance to record their first-ever test series victory in South Africa by losing the next two tests in Johannesburg and Cape Town.
Speaking with Star Sports, Rahul Dravid said, “If you ask me what is the lowest point, I would say the South Africa Test series early on in my career. We won the first Test match in South Africa in Centurion, and then we were playing in the second and third Test match. We have never won a series in South Africa, as you know. It was a really big opportunity for us to win that series.”
The former coach added, “Some of our senior players were not there. Rohit Sharma was injured, and we didn’t have some senior players in that series. But we were very close, and in both the Test matches—the second and the third test matches—in the third inning, we had a big opportunity. We could have set a decent score and won the game, but South Africa played well. They chased back in in the fourth inning. So I would say that that was probably my lowest point in my coaching of not being able to win that series in spite of being ahead.”
