Rahul Dravid’s tenure as Indian Cricket Team’s head coach came to an end after ICC T20 World Cup 2024 triumph.
Former India head coach Rahul Dravid could return to the Indian Premier League (IPL) next year as the coach of Rajasthan Royals (RR), a franchise he played for and coached before.
Dravid’s three-year tenure as India’s head coach came to an end recently with the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. After suffering heart-breaking defeats in the finals of the ICC World Test Championship 2021-23 and the ODI World Cup 2023, Dravid and India finally clinched an ICC trophy last month, by defeating South Africa in the final in Barbados.
Dravid didn’t re-apply for the position, which has now gone to former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir.
A report in Times Of India has claimed that there have been conversations between Dravid and Rajasthan Royals for a potential return ahead of the IPL 2025 season. In fact, the source said that Dravid is very likely to takeover as the head coach of RR.
“Talks are going on between RR and Dravid, and an announcement in this regard is around the corner,” a source told TOI.
Dravid had previously been associated with RR. He led them in 2013 to the IPL playoffs and Champions Trophy final. He then donned the mentor’s hat for the 2014 and 2015 seasons.
It is, though, not yet clear whether RR will retain Kumar Sangakkara, their Director of Cricket, or relieve him of his duties when Dravid joins them. For the unversed, RR currently don’t have a head coach. Shane Bond and Trevor Penny are the assistant coaches.
Dravid moved away from RR and joined the BCCI as the head coach of India Under-19 team, then soon took up the position of the National Cricket Academy chairman. In late 2021, Dravid was appointed as the India head coach.
Apart from the T20 World Cup crown, India won the Asia Cup 2023 and defeated Australia and England in home test series under Dravid’s coaching tenure.
