MS Dhoni is the second Indian cricketer after Sachin Tendulkar whose jersey has been retired by the BCCI.

BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla spoke on the board’s decision to retire MS Dhoni’s no. 7 jersey as a massive mark of respect for the former India captain. He welcomed the decision to do so citing Dhoni’s contributions to Indian team.

Dhoni created a significant impression on the world of cricket during his 15-year-long career. He is the only skipper to win all three major ICC white-ball tournaments, ICC Cricket World Cup, ICC T20 World Cup, and ICC Champions Trophy.

Dhoni played 90 matches in the long format, scoring 4,876 runs at an average of 38.09. He hit six centuries and 33 half-centuries in his career, with a top-score of 224. In tests, he is India’s 14th-highest scorer.

As a captain, he led India in 60 test matches, winning 27, losing 18, and drawing 15. He is one of India’s most successful captains of all time, with a win percentage of 45.00. He led team India to the top-spot in ICC test rankings. He is also the only Indian captain to have whitewashed Australia in the Border-Gavaskar trophy twice, in 2010-11 and 2012-13.

ODI was Dhoni’s best format. He scored 10,773 runs at an average of 50.57 in 350 ODIs. For India, he hit 10 centuries and 73 fifties, with the highest score of 183*. He is India’s sixth-highest ODI run-scorer.

“The decision of BCCI is an honor for MS Dhoni,” says Rajeev Shukla

He led India in 200 ODI matches, winning 110, losing 74. Five matches were tied while 11 failed to produce a result, he had a win percentage of 55.

Rajeev Shukla, vice president of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has welcomed the decision to retire MS Dhoni’s No.7 jersey and praised his commitment to Indian cricket. Dhoni is the second Indian player, after Sachin Tendulkar, whose jersey has been retired by the BCCI. Tendulkar wore jersey No.10, which was retired by BCCI in 2017.

“The decision of BCCI is an honor for MS Dhoni because of his contribution to Indian cricket. He has immensely contributed to world cricket and Indian cricket. This is a good decision. No.7, which was associated with him, cannot be diluted…someone else who could have had that number,” Shukla told ANI.
