The 90th edition of the Ranji Trophy tournament will begin on October 11, 2024 and it will conclude in March 2025. The tournament will be played in two phases, split by the white-ball domestic competitions.
Mumbai are the defending champions of the Ranji Trophy, having won their 42nd title in the previous season.
The Ranji Trophy 2024-25 will be played in two legs, and in between the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (T20) and the Vijay Hazare Trophy (50-over format) will be contested.
In the first phase of the Ranji Trophy, each participating team will play five league games during October and November before the focus shifts to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy will be played from November 13 to December 15. The Vijay Hazare Trophy will start on December 21 and end on January 18, 2025. After the conclusion of both white-ball tournaments, the second phase of the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 will commence on January 23, 2025, with the final being played from February 26, 2025.
As usual, the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 season is split into two divisions: Elite and Plate, with 32 teams in the Elite category and six teams in the Plate category. The elite teams are divided into four groups of eight teams each. The Plate division has six teams.
The Elite division teams will play one game against each opponent in their respective groups in a single round-robin format. The top two sides from each Elite group will progress towards the quarter-finals, followed by the semi-finals and the final.
Meanwhile, the Plate division has one group of six teams who will play one game against each other. The top four teams in this division will progress to the semi-finals and the winners of those will play the final of the Plate division in the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 season.
The top two sides in the Plate division will also earn promotion to the Elite division for the next season, while the bottom two teams combined in all four Elite groups will be relegated to the Plate division.
