Virat Kohli has managed only 29 runs in four knocks so far in the tournament.

India have won all their completed games so far in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024 with little contribution from opening batsman Virat Kohli. Ahead of the Super 8 game against Bangladesh, batting coach Vikram Rathour said that while he is satisfied with the performances of the middle-order, he is “not happy” with the lack of contribution from Kohli.

The 35-year-old former India captain, who was the Orange Cap winner in the Indian Premier League 2024, has managed scores of 1, 4, 0 and 24. His latest knock, a run-a-ball 24 with only one six and no four against Afghanistan, came under heavy criticism as on the same pitch Suryakumar Yadav blasted 53 (28) and Hardik Pandya scored 32 (24).

I would love if Virat Kohli gets going and scores more runs: Vikram Rathour

India will take on Bangladesh for their second Super 8 round match on Saturday at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, North Sound, Antigua. India are expected to stick with Kohli at the top, and Rathour is expecting the senior batsman to get back among runs soon.

“I’m not happy. I would love if he gets going and scores more runs. But yeah, it is good that when you are challenged at times and you know the guys who are not getting too much batting in India sometimes, they are the ones who put up scores. Our middle order came to play. So it was good to see,” the India batting coach said.

Rishabh Pant and Suryakumar have been India’s two best batters so far, and are the only two in the side who have scored more than 100 runs.

In their upcoming game, while a victory for India will see them have one foot in the semi-final, Bangladesh will be fighting for survival, having lost their first match to Australia.

“They’re a good unit. They have a lot of guys who can [challenge us with] spin bowling and they are good in certain conditions,” Rathour said of the Bangladesh bowling attack.
