India's tour of South Africa 2024

Ravindra Jadeja, Shubman Gill yet to join T20I squad in SA; Deepak Chahar to fly late - Reports

Ravindra Jadeja and Shubman Gill are in UK for a holiday after the conclusion of ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.

Team India landed in Durban on Wednesday for a month-long tour of South Africa. The only frontier they are left to breach in test cricket. India will be playing a three-match T20I series, three-match ODI series, and a two-match Test series against the Proteas starting on coming Sunday at Kingsmead, Durban. With most of the squad members already assembled for the first game in Durban, three members are yet to join the Indian camp. 

All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and opener Shubman Gill will be joining the squad soon as they will be flying from the UK. Ravindra Jadeja is vice-captain of the team and he was on a personal tour of the UK after conclusion of India’s ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 campaign. Shubman Gill is also in the UK for a holiday after the World Cup 2023 final on 19th November which India lost against Australia at Narendra Modi International Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad. 

Deepak Chahar’s availability looks uncertain

Fast-bowler Deepak Chahar’s father, who reportedly suffered a brain stroke last week, is still unwell and there is no official update regarding Chahar joining the squad soon. Sources have informed that Chahar will be flying to South Africa soon and join the squad. Chahar is part of the India’s white-ball squads. Chahar was also part of the final few games in the recently concluded five-match T20I series against Australia but missed the last game in Bengaluru due to a family emergency. 

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has allowed all of these guys to join the team later along with a member of Indian support staff. The first T20I is scheduled to be played at Kingsmead, Durban on Sunday, 10th December. Shiv Sundar Das and Salil Ankola who are part of the Indian selection panel under Ajit Agarkar, are expected to be present in South Africa. India A side will also travel to South Africa. 

The Indian team will have their first training session on Friday morning at Kingsmead in Durban. From Durban, the caravan will move to Gqueberha (Port Elizabeth) for the second T20I scheduled to be played on 12th December, The final T20I game will be played in Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on 14th December. The ODI series will be played on the 17th, 19th, and 21st of December while the Test series will commence on Boxing Day.
