India suffered a 1-2 series defeat in ENG vs IND ODIs.
India ended the UK tour with just one win. They played seven T20Is and three ODIs, and their only win came in the first ODI against England in Birmingham. The ODI series saw a good fight from both sides, and the final ODI ended in favour of England.
They beat India by 27 runs and won the series 2-1. India tried hard; Rohit Sharma scored his 34th ODI ton and made 138 off 110 balls. Shubman Gill (77) and Virat Kohli (74) also played well, but it went in vain.
It was the third ODI series defeat for captain Gill out of four he has led. India were below standard with the form, but some cricketing decisions were also beyond thinking. Below we will talk about three major reasons why India lost the ENG vs IND ODI series.
Three reasons behind India’s loss in ODI series against England
1. Poor Team Selection

Poor selection has been a consistent area of concern for India across formats. India went in with only three specialist bowlers in the first two games, and it didn’t help the team’s cause. Rahul didn’t play in the second game; Bumrah didn’t play in the series decider.
On top of that, Kuldeep Yadav didn’t get a game when other Indian spinners were struggling. India picked up only three wickets in three games between 20 and 40 overs. The poor selection surely made an impact on the performance.
2. Failure of middle order

The bulk of the runs were scored by the Indian top three. But India didn’t get much contribution from the middle order. Rohit Sharma scored a century in the final game, while Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli scored two half-centuries each.
Apart from these three, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan, Axar Patel, Shivam Dube, and Washington scored a combined 243 runs in the ODI series. These poor performances from the middle-order batters didn’t help India’s cause.
3. Poor Bowling

Not just batters, Indian bowlers were also not at their best. Jasprit Bumrah bowled well at an economy rate of 4, but he took only two wickets. Axar Patel and Prasidh Krishna took five wickets each, but they leaked runs. As a bowling unit, India did well in the first game, but couldn’t make mark in the next two games.
India lacked in the middle overs and couldn’t pick a wicket, and in the final ODI at Lord’s, they were clueless with the ball. Unlike English bowlers, who hit the hard length and contained the Indian batting unit.
