Ricky Ponting recently parted ways with IPL team Delhi Capitals as their head coach.

Legendary Australian captain Ricky Ponting has revealed why he doesn’t want to coach the England’s white-ball teams. Ponting’s statement came days after the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced the departure of their white-ball head coach Matthew Mott.

Mott resigned from his role after the England cricket team failed to defend both their white-ball ICC titles in consecutive tournaments.

Last year, England failed to reach the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 semi-finals. In the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, the Three Lions were knocked out after losing the semi-final against the Indian cricket team. The ECB has named Marcus Trescothick as the interim white-ball head coach for the home summer.

I’ve got other commitments: Ricky Ponting

The former Australian captain Ponting recently ended his seven-year-long tenure as head coach of the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League.

In a recent episode of the ICC review, Ponting confirmed that he is not considering at all to join England as their white-ball head coach as he has other work commitments and is trying to balance his life while spending time with the family.

“No, I wouldn’t ever consider doing that actually. I’m on record saying that international jobs for me right now are not really where my life is at as there’s just so much more time taken up with an international job,” Ponting said on the ICC Review episode

“I’ve got other commitments as well, with my TV work and things that I do and also trying to balance that out with having a decent amount of home time, which I haven’t had much of the last couple of years anyway,” Ponting added.

Coaching England is slightly different for an Australian: Ricky Ponting

Ponting opined that coaching the England team for an Australian, who both are arch-rivals on the field, is not usual. The former Australian skipper further added that the ECB can exclude his name if they are thinking of hiring him as white-ball coach.

Coaching other international teams is one thing, coaching England for an Australian is probably something slightly different, but right now there’s sort of enough on my plate as I’ve got a bit more coming up in the next couple of months in the UK,” Ponting said.

“Australia’s got some white-ball stuff coming up over there which I’ll go and commentate, so no, right now if my name was on the list they can actually take it off,” The former Australian captain concluded.
