Yuvraj Singh believes Rishabh Pant should start in India’s XI over Sanju Samson in the T20 World Cup.

Legendary India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has opined that Rishabh Pant should be the first-choice wicket-keeper for India in the T20 World Cup 2024. He snubbed Sanju Samson for the Delhi Capitals’ (DC) skipper to start in India’s playing XI in the ICC tournament next month.

India have picked Pant and Samson as the two wicket-keeper batters in their 15-man squad for the T20 World Cup, which will be played in June in the West Indies and USA. Both players had an impressive league phase in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.

Leading the Rajasthan Royals (RR), Samson scored 504 runs at an average of 56 and a strike rate of 156. He notched up five fifties in the tournament so far and could add to it in the playoffs. Pant, who returned from a long injury break enforced due to his car accident in December 2022, hit the right notes straightaway, scoring 446 runs at an average of 40 and a strike rate of 155.

I believe that Rishabh Pant has massive potential: Yuvraj Singh

One of the heroes of India’s 2007 T20 World Cup triumph, Yuvraj Singh heaped praise on Pant’s “massive potential” and his pedigree as a “match-winner on the big stage” while naming the DC captain as his preferred choice over the RR skipper. Yuvraj also pointed out that Pant being a left-hander would make a point of difference in India’s right-handed heavy middle-order.

Speaking with the ICC, Yuvraj gave his thoughts on the Pant vs Samson debate.

Yuvraj said, “I’d probably go for Rishabh. Obviously Sanju is also in great form, but Rishabh left-hander, and I believe that Rishabh has massive potential to win games for India, which he has done in the past.”

“Lot more in Test cricket, and he’s someone who I feel can be a match-winner on the big stage.”

India’s first match in the T20 World Cup 2024 is against Ireland on June 5 in New York.
