IPL 2025: Rohit Sharma named captain as ex-India cricketer names his team of the tournament

Rohit Sharma played under the leadership of Hardik Pandya in the IPL 2025 for Mumbai Indians.

Former Indian cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu has named his Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 team of the tournament. What caught the attention of many was that he picked Rohit Sharma as the captain of his side, keeping aside Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) skipper Rajat Patidar, who won the title as leader, and Shreyas Iyer, who took Punjab Kings (RCB) to the final. 

Navjot Singh Sidhu’s IPL 2025 XI will also see Rohit Sharma opening the innings. The Mumbai Indians (MI) batter had a decent outing with the bat this year as he slammed 418 runs at a strike rate of 149.28 to go with four half-centuries, helping his side reach the playoffs. 

Sidhu’s choice to name him skipper surprised many, as Rohit Sharma hasn’t been captaining in the IPL since the start of the 2024 season. However, the former Indian cricketer cited his success as an Indian captain and his understanding of the game as the reasons behind his choice to name Sharma as skipper. 

Virat Kohli has also been picked by Navjot Singh Sidhu in his IPL XI. The RCB batter hammered 657 runs in 15 innings with eight half-centuries. At three, he picked Gujarat Titans (GT) keeper-batter Jos Buttler, who hit 538 runs in the season. 

PBKS skipper Shreyas Iyer, who is rated as the best captain of the IPL 2025, will be batting at four in Sidhu’s team of the tournament. The right-hander mustered 604 runs, hitting six half-centuries at a strike rate of 175.07. 

Sidhu’s team also features Nicholas Pooran along with the Pandya brothers. While Krunal played a huge role in RCB winning the IPL 2025, Hardik took MI to the playoffs of the tournament. 

Two top wicket-takers in the IPL 2025, Prasidh Krishna and Noor Ahmad, were also picked by Navjot Singh Sidhu in his team of the tournament. The other two fast bowlers in his XI are Josh Hazlewood and Jasprit Bumrah, who both were top-notch with the ball.
