Rohit Sharma became the third Indian captain to win a World Cup trophy.

An emotional Rohit Sharma walked up to the pitch and ate some pieces of soil at the Kensington Oval in Barbados after leading India to the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 trophy.

On Saturday, Rohit became only the third Indian skipper, after Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni, to win a World Cup trophy as India defeated South Africa in the final by only seven runs in Barbados.

India also became the first-ever team to win a Men’s ICC T20 World Cup undefeated. South Africa were also undefeated until the final, but choked in the death overs of their chase, failing to score 30 runs in 30 balls.

To show respect to the pitch on which he and his team became world champions, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma ate some soil from the pitch at the Kensington Oval.

While other players were celebrating, Rohit walked up to the centre of the ground and pulled out a couple of crumbs of soil from the pitch on which the final was played and ate them before walking back to his teammates.

Although Rohit managed only nine runs in the final, he finished as second-highest scorer of the tournament. Sharma cracked 257 runs at a strike rate of 156, which included half-centuries against Australia and England.

Virat Kohli top-scored in the game with 76 runs and bagged the Player of the Match award. While receiving the award, Kohli announced his retirement from T20Is.

Later on, in the press conference, Rohit also confirmed his retirement from the shortest format of the game.

Rohit said at the press conference after the final, “This was my last [T20I] game as well. No better time to say goodbye to this format. I’ve loved every moment of this. I started my India career playing this format. This is what I wanted, I wanted to win the cup.”
