Rohit Sharma to be rested for part of West Indies tour - Reports

Reportedly, India captain Rohit Sharma will be rested for part of India's tour of West Indies which will start in July.

Team India are in a one month break from international cricket. Now they will play a multi-format series against West Indies, starting on July 12 with the first of two test matches in Dominica. The Indian team led by Rohit Sharma lost their second consecutive World Test Championship final at the Oval against Australia. It didn't end well and India suffered a humiliation of 209-run defeat.

However, with the upcoming West Indies tour is still almost a month away, the Indian board is likely to rest some of the seniors while some will get dropped after the poor performance. India might send a totally new look team to the tour across all three formats. Both teams will play two tests, followed by three ODIs and five T20Is. The tour will conclude on August 13, with the fifth and final T20I match in Lauderhill, Florida.

Rohit Sharma is going through a rough patch with his own form

The Indian skipper Rohit Sharma is going through a lean patch. He was not his best in the 2023 Indian Premier League and couldn't make a big score in the WTC final 2023 against Australia. Thus, there have been speculations that the BCCI might ask Rohit to take a rest from part of West Indies tour. This decision will be taken to manage his workload across all three formats, with Asia Cup and ODI World Cup coming up.

The 35-year-old managed 332 runs in the IPL 2023 at a strike rate of 132.80. Some reports confirm that he might be rested either from test or white-ball squad or both. A source said in an interaction with Times India, "Rohit looked a bit jaded during the IPL and the World Test Championship final in England. The selectors want him to rest for some part of the West Indies tour. He’s likely to miss the Tests or the eight-match white-ball series (three ODIs and five T20Is) to follow. The selectors will speak to Rohit and then take a decision."

In case, he misses the two tests, Ajinkya Rahane is the option to captain India, who had a strong performance against Australia on his comeback. However, Cheteshwar Pujara, who is in doubt for his place might get an edge if Rohit Sharma or Virat Kohli will be rested. Notably, the BCCI is expected to pick the squads for the West Indies tour on 27th June.
