Rohit Sharma was unimpressed with Jaiswal during India’s fielding on day 1 at the MCG.

The much-awaited Boxing Day test of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 started on Thursday, December 26.

Opting to bat first, Australia started the game on the front foot with openers Usman Khawaja and Sam Konstas adding 89 runs quickly. Making his test debut, the 19-year-old Konstas made 60 runs off just 65 balls including six fours and two sixes.

At 230/2, with Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith in the middle of a solid stand, Australia seemed to be taking control of the game. However, as has often been the case in the series, the Indian team made a strong comeback through Jasprit Bumrah. The Indian speedster took three wickets in succession, including that of Travis Head for a duck.

An interesting moment in the game occurred during Ravindra Jadeja’s over after the tea break. Steve Smith defended a fuller-length delivery on the front foot, but Yashasvi Jaiswal, fielding at silly point, jumped in anticipation of a big shot.

India captain Rohit Sharma, fielding in the slips, was unhappy with Jaiswal’s conduct and scolded the youngster, saying, “Aree Jassu Gully cricket khel raha hai kya? Niche baith ke reh, jab tak ball khelega nahi tab tak uthne ka nahi, niche baith ke reh. (Are you playing gully cricket? Stay low till the ball is played.)“

At the time of writing, India have reduced Australia to 291/5 after 80 overs. Steve Smith (68*) and Alex Carey (23*) are at the crease. India will try to get a few more wickets before the end of the day’s play to keep Australia’s first innings total in check.
