"Dear work wife.." Rohit Sharma pens emotional note for outgoing head coach Rahul Dravid

Rohit Sharma retired from T20Is while Rahul Dravid concluded his stint as head coach after ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

Rohit Sharma, India’s T20 World Cup 2024-winning captain, penned an emotional note for the outgoing India head coach Rahul Dravid. Dravid’s tenure ended with India winning the T20 World Cup 2024 in Barbados on June 29.

Rahul Dravid had taken over as India’s head coach from Ravi Shastri after the 2021 T20 World Cup and joined forces with Rohit Sharma, who replaced Virat Kohli as the India captain. The two formed a very good combination as India reached semi-finals of the T20 World Cup in 2022.

However, their combination reached its peak in 2023-24, when India were virtually undefeatable at home and did well overseas also. India won the Asia Cup 2023 and reached the finals of the World Test Championship 2021-23 and ICC ODI World Cup. However, they lost both of the championship games to Australia.

Originally, Dravid’s contract came to an end after the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. But, Dravid then accepted an extension of his tenure till the T20 World Cup 2024 and finally realized his dream of winning an ICC World Cup.

Rohit Sharma’s heartfelt note for Rahul Dravid

Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma formed an amazing bond and Rohit revealed that he tried to convince Dravid to continue after the T20 World Cup as well. On the other hand, Dravid stated that he had fun working with Rohit and hoped they remained friends afterward.

Dravid had also revealed that he was ready to quit as India’s head coach after defeat in the ICC World Cup final in 2023, but Rohit called him and asked him to stay one to have one more crack at the ICC title in T20 World Cup.

And on July 9, 2024, Rohit shared his gratitude and respect for his senior cricketer and head coach on Instagram with a heartfelt note.

He wrote: “Dear Rahul bhai, I have been trying to find the right words to properly express my feelings on this but I’m not sure I ever will so here’s my attempt.

Since my childhood days, I have looked up to you just like billions of others but I was lucky enough to get to work with you this closely. You are an absolute stalwart of this game but you left all of your accolades and achievements at the door and walked in as our coach and came on a level where we all felt comfortable enough to say just about anything to you. That is your gift, your humility and your love for this game even after all this time. I have learnt so much from you and every memory will be cherished. My wife refers to you as my work wife and I’m lucky to get to call you that too.

This was the only thing missing from your arsenal and I’m so happy that we got to achieve it together. Rahul bhai it has been an absolute privilege to get to call you my confidant, my coach and my friend.”
