Rohit Sharma just scored 11 runs during the IPL 2024 match between MI and KKR at Wankhede.
In a major concern for the Indian cricket team ahead of the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024, captain Rohit Sharma suffered mild back stiffness during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on May 3.
During the match between MI and KKR at Wankhede, Stadium, Mumbai, Rohit Sharma wasn’t included in Mumbai’s starting XI and was used as an Impact Player during the game.
After losing the match against two time champions KKR by 24 runs, Mumbai’s veteran leg-spinner Piyush Chawla has now revealed the reason behind Rohit playing as an impact sub in the match.
Chawla revealed that Rohit had mild stiffness in his back, so as precaution, MI used him as an Impact Player in the game.
“He just had a mild back stiffness so it was just a precautionary thing,” Piyush Chawla said at the post-match press conference. Rohit made just 11 runs off 12 balls as MI failed to chase down a target of 170 on a tricky Wankhede wicket.
It is also to be noted that there is yet to be an official update released from MI team management as well as The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
For pride and reputation: Piyush Chawla on playing remaining league games
In the ongoing tournament, the five-time champions have now suffered eight defeats in 11 games. They are currently placed ninth in the IPL 2024 standings. Even if Hardik-led Mumbai manages to win their remaining games, they might be knocked out of the tournament as their faith is hanging in other teams hands.
Meanwhile, Chawla remained positive when he was asked about what’s left for MI to play for. The leg-spinner added that they will play remaining IPL 2024 matches for pride and the reputation the franchise is having in the Indian cricketing league.
“For the pride and the reputation,” he said, “because sometimes when you enter on the field, you don’t think whether you are going to qualify or you are not going to qualify. You have to play for your name and that’s what we are playing for,” Chawla further added.
