The fifth edition of the SA20 is all set to kick off in January 2027. Sunrisers Eastern Cape won the previous edition, which was their third title in four seasons. They beat Pretoria Capitals in the final to clinch the title.
The Eastern Cape will put their title on the line in the SA20 2027. Meanwhile, preparations for the upcoming season have begun, as all six franchises have confirmed their retained and pre-signed players.
The franchises have made some bold calls and stunned fans with some surprising decisions. The SA20 2027 auction is scheduled for October 7, 2026. A total of 19 slots are left to be filled among the five franchises.
Teams like Paarl Royals and Durban Super Giants have assembled their squads, while the other four teams will be in action to fill the available slots.
JSK released captain Faf du Plessis ahead of the auction
Out of 19 slots, Joburg Super Kings have the joint-most slots to fill. They need six players to complete their squad. The biggest shocker was the Super Kings releasing their captain Faf du Plessis. The 42-year-old has been with the franchise since the first SA20 season.
He led the team in four seasons. Under his captaincy, the Super Kings played 40 matches, winning 16. Individually, Du Plessis is the leading scorer for the franchise in the tournament.
In 40 matches, he has scored 1029 runs at an average of 32.15 and a strike rate of 143.19 with one century and seven half-centuries. Du Plessis is still one of the prominent names in the franchise league.
Though growing age can be a factor, he is still one of the fittest cricketers going around. The decision came as a shocker to many Super Kings fans. However, the franchise seems to have made up its mind and will look for a new captain going forward.
Apart from Du Plessis, the franchise also released Wiaan Mulder, Nandre Burger, and Daniel Worrall. Kieron Pollard was another big name to be released. MI Cape Town have parted ways with the all-rounder, along with Trent Boult and Rassie van der Dussen.
