Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has named former cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya as interim head coach of the senior men’s cricket team.
This decision came after Chris Silverwood resigned as head coach of the side after Sri Lanka’s early exit from the recently concluded ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in June. The Wanindu Hasaranga-led Sri Lanka failed to qualify for the Super Eight of the global tournament.
Jayasuriya also served as a consultant for the Sri Lankan side at the recently concluded ICC tournament. After being appointed as the interim head coach, Jayasuriya said that he was asked to take over the team and that he is happy to coach the senior team.
“I have been asked to take over coaching and I am happy to do it,” Sanath Jayasuriya told news agency AFP.
Sanath Jayasuriya to be interim head coach of Sri Lanka team in the upcoming two series
Jayasuriya’s role as interim head coach of the side will begin when Sri Lanka host India for a white-ball series. Sri Lanka will be hosting India for three ODIs and as many T20Is starting July 27. Notably, the schedule for the entire tour is yet to be confirmed.
The T20I series between India and Sri Lanka will help Men in Blue to check their bench strength and fill the shoes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja, who announced T20I retirements after lifting the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
After the white-ball series against India, Sri Lanka will then travel to England for a three-match test series starting, August 21, with the final match of the series being played at the Kia Oval from September 6.
Jayasuriya will be with the Sri Lanka cricket team as the interim head coach until the SLC finds permanent replacement of Chris Silverwood.
The legendary Sri Lanka cricketer Jayasuriya is expected to begin his stint as coach after the end of the ongoing Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2024 season.
