Sarfaraz Khan scored 556 runs at an average of 92.66 for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy 2022/23 season.

The BCCI, on Tuesday, April 25, 2023, announced the Indian squad for the ICC WTC final to be held at the Oval in London from June 7-11 where the Rohit Sharma-led side will clash with Australia, who topped the final standings for the ICC World Test Championship 2023.

The squad saw the return of Ajinkya Rahane in the Indian team, but many were also surprised to not see the name of Sarfaraz Khan, who has been scoring a ton of runs in domestic cricket, especially the Ranji Trophy for the past three years.

For the unversed, the 25-year-old batter took the domestic circuit by storm with his lethal batting exploits lately. Notably, Sarfaraz was the leading run-scorer in Ranji Trophy 2021-22 season, scoring 982 runs in six matches at an average of 122.75.

In the 2022-23 season, the Mumbai batter scored 556 runs at an average of 92.66. He was the side's third-highest run-scorer after captain Rahane (634) and Prithvi Shaw (595). He had laced it with three tons and one half-century for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy 2022/23 season.

In his final outing against Delhi in January, the batter slammed a majestic 125 despite ending in a losing cause.

Sarfaraz Khan shared a broken heart emoji after being ignored for the ICC WTC Indian squad

Despite knocking on the Indian team's doors, it was reported that he might get a chance to be in the Indian team dressing room for the Bangladesh Test series last year, but it was not to be. Then he was ignored for the four-Test series against Australia at home, where Suryakumar Yadav was handed a debut in place of injured Shreyas Iyer.

Moreover, it was expected that he would be the frontrunner to join the squad as the likes of Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer are confined to the sidelines owing to injuries. While Pant sustained multiple injuries due to a freak car accident in December 2022, Iyer has endured a bulged disc in his lower back.

Sarfaraz Khan was disappointed one more at being ignored by the BCCI selectors for the Indian team and shared his grief on Twitter.
