Shikhar Dhawan has suggested for an ideal replacement of Shreyas Iyer for the Cricket World Cup 2023.

With less than two months left until the start of the 2023 ODI World Cup, India are struggling to find the right player for the No. 4 position. KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, and Rishabh Pant have been out of action for a long time due to respective injuries, which has forced the Indian team to do some experiments in the middle order. That hasn’t worked so far.

Iyer and Rahul are in for a spot in the upcoming World Cup, but India should be ready for the situation when neither of them can make it. It will leave India with no choice but to stick with their experimental plans for the middle order. Meanwhile, veteran opener Shikhar Dhawan has opened up about this situation and named a player who could be ideal for No. 4 in the upcoming ODI World Cup.

“I would go with Surya at four”- Shikhar Dhawan for No. 4 in coming 2023 ODI World Cup

Team India will open their campaign at the ODI World Cup on October 8 against Australia in Chennai. The high-voltage clash against Pakistan will take place on October 14 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Though some media reports confirmed that Rahul might make it to the Asia Cup 2023. But still, both Rahul and Iyer need to prove their match fitness and form to grab a spot in the World Cup squad.

On the other hand, Dhawan feels that in case both of these couldn’t make it to the team, India has Suryakumar Yadav ready to play at no. 4 in World Cup. In an interaction with PTI, Shikhar Dhawan said, “I would go with Surya at four as he is an experienced player and has been playing international cricket for a while.”

Suryakumar is the best Indian batter when it comes to the T20 format, but his ODI numbers are not convincing. He is just averaging 24.33 in 26 games. SKY scored 19, 24, and 35 in the recently concluded three-match ODI series against West Indies. Notably, Shikhar Dhawan was not even considered by the selection committee for the Asian Games 2023. The veteran opener added, “Also, really looking forward to see how Shubman Gill does in the World Cup. Another batter to watch out for will be Rohit Sharma as he did exceptionally well in the last World Cup.”
