Shreyas Iyer poised for India comeback with Sri Lanka tour - Reports

Shreyas Iyer was dropped from BCCI central contracts for 2023-24 season.

Shreyas Iyer, who missed out on India squad for ICC T20 World Cup 2024, is poised to make India’s comeback with the Sri Lanka tour. This is likely to happen after Gautam Gambhir’s expected appointment as India’s head coach.

Shreyas Iyer recently captained the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to their third IPL title in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 with Gautam Gambhir as the mentor of the side.

The Mumbai batter was unfortunate to be dropped from the central contracts along with keeper-batter Ishan Kishan. This was due to his reluctance to play Ranji Trophy and going to KKR camp to practice instead of rehabbing for his back issues at the NCA.

Iyer always maintained that his recurring lower back issue kept him out of the game even though he did play the Ranji Trophy final scoring 90-odd runs.

Shreyas Iyer had an excellent ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 at home and before that he was in runs in the Asia Cup 2023 as well. Iyer hammered 530 runs for India in the World Cup, batting at No. 5, and hit two centuries as well, with one coming in the semi-final of the tournament against New Zealand in Mumbai.

India are scheduled to tour Zimbabwe for five T20Is after the T20 World Cup and after that, they will go to Sri Lanka to play three ODIs and three T20Is. Currently, several young prospects who have performed in the IPL are practicing at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru for five T20Is against Zimbabwe, which will be revealed perhaps next week.

“Shreyas is currently not at NCA. Here mostly those players are there, who have performed in the IPL and will be in contention for Zimbabwe selection. Abhishek Sharma, Riyan Parag, Mayank Yadav, Harshit Rana, Nitish Reddy, Vijaykumar Vyshak, Yash Dayal are all at the camp. Some will go to Zimbabwe T20Is,” a BCCI source told PTI.

“However, there is every possibility that Shreyas will travel for the three-match ODI series in Sri Lanka. The last ODI that India played was in South Africa and he scored a half-century (52). He had 500 plus runs (530) in World Cup and averages just around 50. Can you drop him?” he added.

In case Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav are not rested, they are expected to be the designated captain and vice-captain for the tour.
