Shreyas Iyer-led KKR lost to RR by 2 wickets in a thrilling contest at the Eden Gardens.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Shreyas Iyer didn’t have a good outing against Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Tuesday, April 16. The 31st match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 was played at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata and saw the home team lose a thrilling contest.

KKR were asked to bat first by RR captain Sanju Samson, who had won the toss. KKR posted 223/6 in 20 overs with Sunil Narine shining with his maiden IPL and T20 hundred. He made 109 runs, with 13 fours and six sixes. Angkrish Raghuvanshi (30) and Rinku Singh hit 20* in 8 balls contributed as well.

In response, Riyan Parag (34), Yashasvi Jaiswal (19), and Jos Buttler helped RR put on 100 in 8.2 overs. But then KKR bowlers, Harshit Rana, Varun, and Sunil Narine hit back with 2 wickets each as RR slipped to 121/6.

Rovman Powell (23) gave RR some relief, but Jos Buttler turned the heat on in the death overs, as RR scored 96 runs in the last 5 overs to win the game by 2 wickets on the final ball. Buttler remained unbeaten on 107 in 60 balls, with 6 sixes and 9 fours.

Shreyas Iyer fined for slow overrate offense by IPL

Following their defeat, KKR captain Shreyas Iyer has been penalized for maintaining a slow over-rate in the match against RR.

The Indian Premier League statement read, “As it was his team’s first offense of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to a minimum over-rate offenses, Iyer was fined Rs 12 lakhs.”

The sanction issued on Iyer serves as a reminder to teams to follow the IPL’s rules, especially maintaining the required overrate. The implementation of such restrictions is critical to ensuring that the games run well and that the set times are followed, which is vital for both broadcasters and viewers.
