IND vs AUS: "Won't be shy in taking any suggestions…"- Shubman Gill honoured to captain Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in ODIs

Shubman Gill said Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli bring massive skills and experience to the team.

Ahead of the first ODI between Indian Cricket Team and Australian Cricket Team in Perth, India captain Shubman Gill heaped praises on senior batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. He said that it is an honour for him to captain legends, who are best white-ball players in international cricket.

Rohit and Kohli are all set to make a comeback to the national team in the ODI series against Australia, having last featured in international games during ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in March. This will also be their first international game following their retirement from test cricket earlier this year.

Ahead of India’s tour of Australia 2025, Gill was appointed as the new leader in ODIs, succeeding Sharma. The right-handed batsman did a brilliant job after taking over as test captain in May. Under his leadership, India claimed a 2-2 draw against England in a five-match test series in August and whitewashed the West Indies by a margin of 2-0 in a recent series at home.

While speaking to the media ahead of the first ODI at Perth, Gill said that Rohit and Virat bring massive experience to the Indian team. He also added that it will be an honour for him to lead these batting greats, whom he idolised during his childhood.

“Yes, definitely the kind of skills and experience they bring to the team is massive, and they are probably the best white ball players in the world. These are the kind of players I used to idolize when i was a kid,” the 26-year-old said.

“The kind of game they used to play, the hunger they had that inspired me, it’s a big honour for me to lead such legends of the game, learn from them. I won’t be shy in taking any suggestions in difficult situations from them during the series, “ the Indian opener further added.

Notably, Gill and Rohit opened the batting for India during ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and are expected to open the innings in the series against Australia as well. Kohli, who bats at three, will aim for a similar outing like his previous campaign in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, where he finished as the tournament’s third highest run-scorer.

The right-handed batsman also rocked the field with his form in ICC Champions Trophy 2025 earlier this year, smacking one century and one fifty across five games at an average of 54.50.
