R Sridhar has backed the selectors’ decision to name Shubman Gill as India’s white-ball vice-captain.

Former India fielding coach R Sridhar feels that Shubman Gill is likely to become the all-format India captain in the coming years. Sridhar has thrown his weight behind the selectors and management’s decision to appoint Gill as the new vice-captain in limited-overs cricket.

For the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka, which comprises three T20Is and three ODIs, Gill has been named the deputy of Suryakumar Yadav and Rohit Sharma, despite the presence of Hardik Pandya.

Hardik had been the deputy of Rohit Sharma in white-ball cricket over the past couple of years and had led India in Rohit’s absence. Pandya was the designated vice-captain in the recently concluded ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

After Rohit retired from T20Is, it was expected that Pandya would be ascended to the captaincy position. However, the selectors went with Suryakumar, citing Pandya’s fitness and workload concerns.

Shubman Gill is being groomed as a captain: R Sridhar

R Sridhar joined KhelNow in an exclusive chat organized by Sony Sports Network, the official broadcasters of India’s tour of Sri Lanka 2024 in India. In the interview, he was asked to give his opinion on the decision by the selectors and the new management headed by Gautam Gambhir to appoint Gill as the white-ball vice-captain.

Sridhar said, “Look, it doesn’t matter if I see him as a future captain or not. But the people who make the decisions, they see him as a future captain of the Indian cricket team, and I back it. I have the same opinion as well. He is our all-format player.

He added, “So he is someone we can be looked at as a captain post Rohit’s retirement from the game. He is being groomed as a captain. He has one-year experience of IPL captaincy and recently captained India in Zimbabwe.”
